| The answer would probably be noob-friendliness, just like why is e music so popular? same thing. It sounds very decent to me, but it doesnt sound the best, so you shouldn't use it ever, especially all those presets, god damn filthy noobs. Dont worry I suck too ;) |

Isn't a groove template just another kind of preset? |

| except one requires knowledge to use, the other makes you sound like everyone else and tends to make you lazy. Your bios is a preset. Not an very good comparison. EDM is about prodcution, when you aren't making your own sounds, well it kinda makes you wonder why you are making it in the first place. Why not do pop. Or pop EDM. But when you are doing something that is not really commercial, you are allowed to be an artist; SO be one. |

I don't think Sylenth1 can go any further on its own, so you either have to layer or add processing. |

it's perfectly legitimate to not want to do all sound design from scratch. there are tons of other things about music production people can be into. arrangement, composition, beatmaking, mixing, polishing, telling a story, whatever. |

i honestly am not a purist about anything but the problem is that everyone sounds the same because they all use presets. If you use them just to get an idea , fine. But that isn't what people do. The fact that people admit to using nexus kinda gives you an idea.
And no i disagree. It would be like being a rock band and using a guitar library. There are certain virtues in certain genres. EDM is sound design. This makes you standout from the . |

I always put a beat repeat on my nexus channels to keep it fresh. |

Were can I learn how to do that? :eyes:
On a serious note I like Sylenth, it sure is noob friendly so for someone who wants to learn the basics I think it is a good start. I also think you can get some good sounds from it. |

I think it's more like a rock band using a Stratocaster to get "that sound". Or paiste cymbals. Or a certain type of mic.
Sound design is not the only valid defining element possible for an EDM track.
Also, not all presets sound samey. ;)
I do acknowledge that original sound design is great, and I personally love doing it, it might even make me a better musician, I don't know. But even if I were using unaltered factory presets only, that wouldn't change a thing about the chords progressions, or the bass note placement, or the song structure. |

There are some very basic reasons as to why Sylenth1 is so popular:
1) As opposed to most high-quality VSTs, it's not CPU intensive. If you've got a decent Macbook Pro, you could literally run about 15 or more instances of Sylenth1 and you won't get any CPU overload. Try VSTs like some of the ones you mentioned, and that may not be the case.
2) The interface in Sylenth1 is very inviting, even to beginners. It's basic, easy to modify, almost all parameters can be automated.
3) Sylenth1 is warm, hard to distinguish from many hardware synths, and it has more preset packages out there than probably any other VSTs I know of. Just try all the ones from guys like Freshly Squeezed Samples, and you'll understand what I mean.
4) Like someone mentioned before, it's mentioned a lot in interviews, so if the pros are recommending it, everyone's going to try it out at least once.
5) It was very easy to crack... Which is not good for Lennar Digital in sales, but at least they were getting some "good" press behind the scenes. |
