Insomniac: 'We Don't Want to Book' Superstar DJs Anymore (pg. 3)

Pasquale made the comment at the EDMBiz that a lot of the highly paid djs all play the same records and all they do is fist pump as part of the experience.

Lets be honest if any big dj played a pre-recorded set on stage we'd never really know. So why pay a big dj big $? If the experience is good enough he feels to a degree the djs are not material to having fun. The problem is that without a certain # of big names you might suffer from lower attendance.

He really seems to be passionate about and immersing yourself in the experience. Of course EDC will never be a Burning Man copy, but as noted before he seems to want to go in a that direction a bit.

Insomniac sent out an email a week ago to all dj's managers/agencies/etc. stating that any requests for stage performers to not be there during their sets would not be accepted.

Sunday I was Luke at his Super you and me stage. Chase and status or whatever cleared out that arena. My boy Oliver Twizt had gotten it packed by dropping a bunch of new heavy tracks. But when Chase and whatever went on everyone ing left. Sandro Silva brought the crowd back in the beginning. And then Luke's crowd started to walk in and the crowd easily doubled or tripled. Once Luke was playing it was packed to the point that everyone was boxed in and the crowd started to form next and behind to a building and they were out of sight of the stage. So they obviously knew Luke was playing. And same thing like always, once Luke was done the crowd evaporated.

uhhh, major laser played before chase and status. it was also packed for chase and status so i dont know what you're talking about...

and basically everyone else that was playing at 3am was bigger/better than bingo players so that's why everyone left

So you're telling me that the crowd was the same size when Luke played and Major Lazoe and Chase and Status?

I want some of the drugs you were on.

Even Greg (cool1) texted me that Luke's stage was going off!

Did you stay in the same spot? I walked around stage and I walked in the crowd. That's all I was doing, I never stay put. I noticed the crowd size change BIG time like when Angello played on his stage Friday.

This was before Morillo started playing. But they crowd kept leaving to the point that Morillo left him self because they wouldn't let his wife on stage with him.

What a joke. I was pissed off that he decided to just quit his set.

I think its laughable that pasquale refers to the burning man experience when looking to uncover a new direction for EDC. I find it hard to believe that the etards that attend EDC have the will, knowledge, and everything else needed to participate in similiar ways that burners do at burning man. He should know the extreme differences associated with two experiences. I doubt EDC could ever transform to anything that even closely resembles burning man. If he really wants to deliver a similiar experience he should start from scratch with a new event (not associated with insomniac). He has the resources to pull it off, I have no doubt about that.

I wish pasquale would stop talking about burning man otherwise we're gonna wind up with 60,000 etard candy ravers invading it and turning it into a mini edc. if he loves it so much, he should shut the f**k up.

I really doubt Pasquale's gamble would pay off here, to be honest. EDC sold out about 3 weeks in advance this year, and I'm sure that was LARGELY because of the line-up. I'm guessing they were testing the waters to see if they could sell out without releasing each day's line-up, so yes to some extent people bought tickets for the "experience", but if they released a line-up with few known names, they would have a tough time selling out.

At the end of the day, they are getting more ticket sales because of the popularity of EDM and particular artists within the genre, not because more and more people want to do drugs and ride rollercoasters and bumper cars all day.

I'd love to see him try and it would be cool if it worked because it's always nice to see new talent... but I just don't see it working out.

Like I said before, the main stage lineup could use some trimming down. Sander Van Doorn had a 30-minute set. There was pretty much no point in booking him. Same with some of the others.

The "hosted" stages were a cool addition, and something that I think should stay around. Group Therapy, ASOT, Enter, CC & Friends, etc. all had a nice mix of established names and newcomers, which seems to be what Pasquale is going for. It's the main stage that was over the top.

literally every act i saw this weekend had (large numbers of) people leave at the end...

Everybody I know pretty much went this year because the lineup was irresistable. I think a smarter move would be to start from scratch if he wishes to produce an event based more on the "experience" instead of tampering with the momementum of EDC that has taken over a decade to build to the point where its finally paying big dividends. Im thinking it would have the draw of an event simliar to lightnening in a bottle (5-10k). Even that event relies on artists to pull heads, but the focal point is on the arts and activiites. However, that kind of event still relies on participation.

While I think it is possible to scale back artist budgets and rely on the EDC brand to draw people in, if you are going to bring that many people together based on the idea of the "experience" it typically works better when the participants have a large role in creating the experience themselves rather than having some large scale production team such as the one at insomniac create every last detail of your experience for you.

Burning Man simply provides the platform for burners to come and create and build their own experience. I think that is largely the appeal of the event. This is evident in the different directions the event has taken over its 25 year history. Their is no pasqual at burning man hq directing the art, music, performers, etc. The burners decide what the playa will look like each and every year. Yes grants and permissions are given based on applications due to the large growth and constraints of the event, but the look of the playa each year is largely decided by the individual participants. That is what helps take the focus away from well known music performers.

Insomniac can easily save a ton of money if all the dj's played 2-3 hour sets.

Personally i think this would be the best idea.

It would also give attendees a chance to see every dj they want because they'll have plenty of time to move from one stage to the other.

With these 45min-90min sets its very tough, especially when your with a bunch of people, need to get drinks, bathroom and other random stuff when moving from one stage to the other.

Quality DJ sets > Quantity of dj's

I hope this means we're going to some trance other than what armada and ajunabeats is currently bringing to the table zzzzzzzzz

Less big names means more money in his pocket. That is really the bottom line.

Guy Gerber played a 30 min slot. That is so dumb. I always tell promoters have your headliners play longer sets. Short sets do not let the artist actually get into a groove and take us on a journey.
