I think that the fact most people have skipped lion and a new OS is already under way gives you an accurate idea of its success.

They didn't, Lion had a solid adoption rate and has been downloaded over 6 million times. Lion is currently at roughly 40% install base which is far faster than most operating systems achieve, and I'd go as far as saying that's even been hindered because you needed Snow Leopard to upgrade to Lion. With Mountain Lion, Apple is removing that restriction so you can upgrade from any version of the Mac OS directly to Mountain Lion for only $20.

The real issue with Lion was just the dropped support for legacy applications, but that had to happen eventually.

i mean in the audio / visual domain

i mean with my new laptop i got in 2011, you could not install leopard directly so for most, it wasn't a choice. I tried lion on the laptop. It was a mess.

By the time lion is fullproof and everyone will feel comfortable upgrading, there will be a new OS. This is what happened with many of microsofts OS like Millennium and Vista. WIth mac, has that ever happened ? I mean i never bothered with mac until microsoft went to with vista and it seemed like mac was the only choice at the time.

You could say the same about Windows Vista, I've at least seen numbers as high as 34% and that was for 2011, so you're argument isn't very solid.

If people, and by that I mean mac fan boys, will line up for days to buy the new iPxxx, they jumped on Lion like it was a brand new trampoline. Doesn't mean it's any good.

That's 4 years after release. Lion reached 40% install base in 10 months... And anyway, I wasn't using install base as evidence of how good it is, just to combat that "nobody uses it."

Regardless, Lion has had very positive reviews from most media outlets and users generally seem to love it. But I can understand why it would piss off a lot of audio people, mostly because it removed support for legacy PowerPC code.

Lion has managed to receive an overall 4/5 rating on the Mac App Store (the only way to get it), which is impressive, simply because people tend not to voice their opinions when they're happy, only when they have a complaint. Many of the reviews are negative as a result of that.

This pretty much sums it up. If the money is there and you've fallen for it why not go all the way? :)

That's it, it's sexy, but I've got a complex setup, RME HDSPe madi that needs supporting vian an external Thunderbold to PCIe cabinet and some other fun stuff.

What i don't want is spend 3K$ then find out some ain't working and the Apple guys saying, yeah, that freezing every once and while, or that kernel panic, it happens, it's not apple, it's Steinberg, or NI, or...

you know..... works now, it pure cosmetics, ecosystem and (supposed) simplicity: work more, tweak less
Looney4Clooney
i would wait. The fact you can't upgrade ram is a big you to anyone that buys their right now. Well the laptops anyways. I would try and get something that is used.
Raphie
I'm waiting, no full 64bit support no 16GB on Ivy bridge chipsets
I'll stick a bit longer on Win7 and enjoy the iPad for leisure
Looney4Clooney
what are you trying to do ?

why can't your ipad work for pc. Surely there is an osculator type app for pc or you could just use midi.

Raphie
I'm not sure really what i'm trying to do.
3 things basically:

Got a Core i7 2700K with 16GB, 5x 64GB SSD, of which 2 in RAID, running windows 7 on a 30" Dell LCD @ 2560 * 1600, This DAW runs Cubase, Wavelab and works flawless

Then i got a Dell XPS L702x Core i7 2760QM with SSD and 8GB, this laptop runs flawless too. (Cubase Elements and Wavelab Elements + Traktor 2.5 (S4)

Now I've since recently also got an iPad 3rd generation 32GB, which I can use as a remote for my SSL X-patch, or Cubase. Or do some touchosc stuff which is not really what I need. But iPad itself just works great. and IF Apple PC's work as great as the iPad, I could imagine myself behind a Thunderbolt 27" display, with a MAC mini i7 and an AIR i5 for on the go.

All my software has cross platform licenses, so migrating is not a poblem. I don't have a special urge, other than the grass looks greener.
Looney4Clooney
I would say right now, the grass is covered in snow and perhaps waiting is a the best option. The overall atmosphere is one of uncertainty. People are kinda thinking mac is going to ditch the pro user. I think now is just a bad time to switch.

If it runs flawlessly, why bother. I mean just get a nicer case or something. But i mean why would that even matter if you spent the money in getting a computer room. I mean sure, when people see my twin tower mac pros , they assume i know what i'm doing and vice versa when people see your pc, they kinda have this sense of ahh jeez here we go, but like maybe you could just use a mac keyboard and paint the box silver ? lol :p
