Some DJs are more into turntablism or now, technology. They play wth 4 decks, loops, effects, feels the need to show their skills. It's not so much about music.

It often results in cold, souless, loopy and sometimes annoying sets.

They don't let the music breathe, there's no "story". You get 3 hours of banging techno that goes nowhere. The point is to admire their skills, not to enjoy yourself.

That's what they do.They don't let people really free to be within themselves. I think it works for a show, less for night clubbing.

Totally agree on all points. It feels more ego-centric to me. Like "look what I can do". That's not what I pay for when I go to a show. I pay to get into the music, ideally (rarely) get lost in the sound. Obviously many enjoy his shows, he's very successful.

Gaiser was good and impressive, although non-stop loops and fx always gets on my nerves after a while.

But Richie's set was horrible... I just can't stand it. Come to think of it, I really never enjoyed a Hawtin set. Continuous generic FXs and build-ups, but he never has any flow or story. All over the place...

I remember at Aria just standing there and wondering where the hell he was going with this. Same thing while watching this stream.

Plus the video promo suggested maybe a deeper, more forward thinking sound, something different. But he just played generic boring techno.

I would have loved to catch Hobo's live set...

Agreed, saw Richie at Stereo for the 10/11th? Anniversary? His set was a mess. Layo and Bushwackaaaaaaaaaaa.ahrgghfhhrfhfhfhehffhfhfhfherfhrevherhfeh

I feel this whole "storytelling" is a bit overrated. Refering to any set, can someone really tell me: "This set's story is about a guy backpacking in New Zealand" or "This set's story is about a lady with three kids struggling to make ends meet since she's been dumped by her husband"?

I'm assuming that when people refers to storytelling, they refer to a sense of flow, of cohesion. Maybe i'm just the most unimaginative individual ever for not picturing unicorns galloping in a field of dandelions during a breakdown with swooshing synth lines?

... and no it's not just about cohesion.

yeah, it's the techno-minimalphiles on one end, and the gimmicky, loud, kazoo electro or trouse playing guys on the other end.. both forgetting about the dancefloor groove, which is what should be about, imo.

Then what is it about Martin?

Point me to one of your set and tell me what story you were trying to tell
Ravemontreal
You are so way off on this one Benoit that I can't even explain it to you.

If you are talking about a story, like a movie or a book would tell a story, than we both agree that any instrumental music doesn't provide this kind of storyline.

It so incredibly obvious that it would be stupid to debate on this now wouldn't it?

Martin, why not?

I just think that that "story" in a set is probably different to everyone listening to it. I have yet however to read your explanation of the "storytelling" concept. You're always insightful so please give it a shot. I've been following you from the very first day of Ravemontreal so your opinion/explanation definitely matters to me

Adam, I'll listen to the set for sure and see if I can figure it out the story

(and please, your tribal comment...it's ing ridiculous)
Ravemontreal
It's hard to explain Benoit,

It's like asking Picasso to explain why he paints ugly strange faces, while telling him that abstract art is overrated and you much prefer paintings of fruits in a basket.

But i'm no Picasso ;-)

Yes, you can play random tech house tracks that goes well together, you could do a 'shuffle' on them for 2 hours and you will have a 'logical' or 'cohesive' flow. Not all DJs are storytellers.

Some sets, some moments, are not appropriate for storytelling. Short 2 hours sets in a 'show' environment won't have much story into them.

But I can guarantee you that you can't play for 8-9 hours and keep people interested if you don't know how to build a story and know where you are going with it.

I was one of the first ones to post online sets with a cover image and a title. Because I see my sets like movie soundtracks. They all have their own idea behind it. Starman, Ghost, Monday Morning.... They all have guidelines for you to build the story.

The story is obviously within yourself, and will be much influenced by what is around you. You don't have words in the music to tell you how you should feel, except maybe sometimes when I carefully choose them to have a specific impact.

But the DJ storyteller knows how to create guidelines in these emotions. He will put the pressure at the right moment, release it when you need it, paint a contrast of colors that are meaningful to one another in order to bring specific emotions within you.

He will take hours to lead you and build up that specific moment when everybody, at the same time, will feel something similar.

At one point you feel everything is sexy around you, then it goes deep, then suddenly there's a breath of fresh air and you feel light again, and while the story is different in you, it's kind of the same for everyone.

The DJ will read the crowd, their body language will speak to him, and this exchange will make you, a participant of how the story goes.

The story, is basically a profound comprehension of emotions. Like a movie, where the happy and sad moments complements each other.

When the crowd fully trust a DJ, he will bring them all the way to the edge of the cliff, and never let them go.

When you have thousands of people on drugs, it is pure chaos in everyone's mind. But the storyteller will control chaos.

It's the best way I can explain it.
