as a label, you sell to people that listen to music.
A contest aimed at producers as a marketing tool doesn't really seem effective in any way what so ever.

And why on earth would you want to commit to releasing material you might not like. Always make sure you have control of your brand. Give money, tickets, a rim job. But a release , i mean for one, i don't think people care about that anymore, and it isn't going to do anything for you.

A contest where people can chose the logo where they vote submit their email or like on facebook, some way to get real exposure from actual people that you want to sell to and win the chance of something worth 2000$. That is aimed at everyone , you have their email. and most people if you don't come across like some ty label will be interested.

The initial problem to solve was the fact that I need music material. This is another way to adress the problem. But I think I've got it figured out more or less. I'm going for a cross-breed between what Tehlord and Woony said, combined with what I believe is necessary.

Your post does raise give me some nice new ideas though :).

I'd be most inclined to join a remix or demo competition if the label could guarantee good promotion for the release and also for me as an artist.

A budget for a remix by a big name artist is also a good prize in my eyes as your name will then be in the minds of some of the fans of that particular artist.

A cash prize is always nice, but that's more geared towards the short term, I myself am more interested in things that can help me in the long term like getting my music to the proper audience, to build up a solid fanbase.

Out of curiosity: what styles of music are you gonna focus your label on?

Having a product to sell is sort of step one. You are marketing something you have no control over. I think you would be placing a lot of your success and failure on the outcome of what amateur producers will make. You.cant sell If you don't have a brand and leaving the single most import component up to chance seems like a disaster.

I'm still undecided which route I'm going down specifically genre-wise. Mostly along the lines of the underground type of progressive house, techhouse and deephouse.

Examples of what I'd like to put out:

Deillon
Do you have contact with artists like Passenger 10 to drop future promo's?
Looney4Clooney
You need to figure out what you want to sell before you do anything. Not sure how you're being graded but I would say not even knowing what you want to sell and how to brand it and then creating a marketing plan for a something you won't know what t is until it is too late ....

I've chosen a specific audience for the thesis, I'm just not sure wether my heart is telling me to do something else than what is on the paper haha.

@Deillon: Have talked with, but not much. And yes there's a few other too luckily.
Woony
You better have some really ing good marketing because these tracks literally sound exactly the same as the stuff the 234567 other digital prog labels put out.

How much play money are you allowed

Not much. About 5k. Hard to start off strong that way. Business plan sent out for approval. A nice 80pager. Now need to finish my thesis. Gogogogogogo!
