At festivals, he has exactly one hour to impress the non-educated-newb attendance, you know, the one's who have never heard his name before they decided to throw on their neon shades and take their friends to this "really sick festival they keep hearing about."

That crowd means that he has one hour of increased commercial play to appeal to their ridiculous musical needs and make some future cash off of them. The difference in Ferry playing at EZ compared to Ferry playing a solo event, a longer set, or, even, in Canada/Europe, are completely different, as I have been witness to them ALL. DJ's have to do business: play what the audience wants to hear (which doesnt always work out for us, unfortunately). Long story short, I was not surprised in the least when I got several texts saying that "Ferry was at EZ but killed it at Roseland." It was exactly what I expected to hear........ although I guarantee he is still better in Europe than at Roseland ;) ;)

Point well made

On the flip side, I've heard his last couple visits to Pacha where he had his own sets were not that good... this was the best Ferry has been in awhile it seems.

Ditto. Seen him a few times in Euro-land and he took me on such a magical journey each time. It saddens me that some DJ's feel as if the Euro crowds are sophisticated enough to hear their "real " while playing more mainstream here at home. DAMMIT, AMERICA!! :whip: LOL

I actually agree with you on this. Ask any close friend of mine (AYStar, etc) and I have always confided that, minus his Crobar days, He always seems to play his best just about every where else (although I personally had a blast in April at Pacha and thought it was worlds better than the past couple years ie: Best Buy, etc)

Maybe its because I have been to see him a plethora of times outside of NYC: in Canada about a gazillion times(former "TOTA" here and frequent Montreal visitor) Washington DC (which I've learned is his fav USA club and he always RIPS it there), and Europe: Full On Ferry in Rotterdam, Dance Valley, Bloemandaal Beach Party, etc........because of this, perhaps I see his true potential? Im not sure. His NYC sets are usually "good" but not great in comparison if you catch him in Toronto or Montreal the very next day, which, btw, I have done this trip several times in the past. Its like apples n oranges from one night to the next.

Point made: In my experience, if I had a weekend in which Ferry was playing in both DC/Glow and NYC/Pacha, but I could only get to one, I would ALWAYS choose DC. I havent missed any of his DC sets in 5++ years and he has detroyed the place EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Its a strange thing, but I just happen to like Ferry a lot more 100% of the time, outside of New York.

Do you think this is because its NYC and the promoters/clubs are pressuring him into playing more style that caters to the general audience and not just the fans? Ive seen him buncha times at pacha and had great time (we had a table for your bday before) and Crobar residence was ing amazing.

I remember when I saw Matt Darey at Cielo and he was such a huge disappointment...

It seems that the bigger clubs/promoters in NYC put pressure on DJs to follow a certain guidelines...

Im not sure, but its a possibility. Not saying I havent enjoyed Ferry in NYC (because I have!) but I can promise you that his styles are certainly different elsewhere (nearly 100% of the time). I can see the business side of him come out when he plays for different crowds, which of course, doesnt always work out for my tastes when at home, but thankfully I have had the privilege of seeing him all over the world and gotten to know every side of him. You can see his blantant choices, for instance: the cheesiest sets I've ever heard him play were in Boston. But, isnt that to be expected? Its generally an uneducated crowd that expects 3 hours straight of his most famous, big-hit songs. His best sets were in Europe, Montreal (and, ironically, Washington DC). I can SEE and HEAR the massive differences and know exactly what to expect when I go certain places.

That being said, I remember speaking to a "big" DJ with another TA once when we were in Montreal. We were blown away by his set and how different he played there: it was mind-blowing, felt like I was on a musical journey. One of my fav sets to date. It was the first time I took notice of him, because he had NEVER played like that in New York. When he learned we were from NYC the convo went something like this (super-shortened version):

"I love New York, but its my least favorite place to play on earth. I need to see a therapist for a week prior and a week after each gig there. The people just CRUSH you with criticism in that town, not to mention their extremely broad request range. There is so much tug-of-war between what people expect me to play, it seems I can never make anyone happy from the promoters to the fans to the newbs. Its an impossible city. I hate it. No offense. I love you guys."

I wonder if he would have said the same thing if he had played at Love. ie. What did Cosmic Gate or JOC say when they spun there?

Not only can I see this, its true. Its such a diverse city and such a diverse crowd, you will NEVER be able to please everyone at the same time. I guess that's a blessing and a curse at the same time.
