He's probably right. The kind of crowds he plays to just don't want to hear that kind of trance, and if he played it he would lose their attention. This basically illustrates how he has boxed himself into a corner with his fans - he can't play good music he enjoys anymore, because he has steadily moved away from the kind of crowds who would appreciate it.

that really is a fascinating way too look at preformance art in general. i tend to agree with him in terms of being unique and honing your own style but you cant always appeal to the masses. youre an entertainer yes but youre also an artist... and if youre good you will find your audience. it may not be as big as Armins but at least you wont have to hold back on playing the type of music you really want to.
p.s. id love to hear an ambient set from him

DJing as a profession is not about playing music that you like yourself. If a DJ only plays the music he likes himself it would be the same as a trashman who decides which pieces of trash he picks up.
not entirely for yourself, no. timing and crowd reaction is very important but the music you bring should be a capsule of your own tastes otherwise whats the point? youre a human jukebox

Huhn?
Think you got it mixed up, there. Jukeboxes play what other people want to hear. DJs play what moves them, first and foremost.

Why the hell would a crowd just stand still while this is being played?

Hey Jack, sorry. It's called ARMIN VAN BUUREN PRESENTS – DOWNTEMPO SESSIONS:
That tracklist still looks pretty bollocks. Just a load of "chillout" mixes of crap trance records. That has never been real ambient.
saluyamo
Has he ever released an ambient/chillout mix?

Isn't he the dude who invented the Hamlisch maneuver?:tongue3

Its definitely Sander Bouma and Ruben De Ronde who chooses those tracks for asot and ASOS as well.

]]]Most of the time they are too busy taking photos and doing love hearts these days so I don't know why would he say that when the crowd is not even dancing in the first place?

So, that explains why one hears the "FUNKY CHICKEN", "LIVING LA VIDA LOCA", and "MACARENA" so frequently at weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc :p
