Joe Claussell Wins Again

This guy puts a lot of emotion into his recordings. It is astounding really.

the programmed drums and hard quantization just sort of ruin this type of music. It sounds like really bad fusion music minus the musician ship. IT sounds awful when you try and sound non electronic and have everything programmed like that by someone that doesn't know how to program.

i mean this is pretty much what that is trying to do but by people that are musicians. Not really a fan of either but if you are going to try and sound natural , do it better ?

^^ if you are going to get on your high horse and look down on certain music at least get your facts straight. using an example of music that is not doing what the track at hand is trying to do really help your cause either.

admittedly i'm a fan of claussell and know that he, along with the body & soul crew, incorporates live sounds into machine music. when he wants a trumpet or strings or whatever he actually hires people to play it instead of sampling or using vsti's or sound libraries.

the video you incorporated is people emulating machine music which was obviously not trying to sound human. now for the record, i really liked it but it's something you can have heard on countless drum & bass records from the mid 90's.

i know that it's what jojo mayer is trying to do and even though this sort of fusion is the cousin to what claussell is trying to do, it's still comparing apples and oranges.

anyhow, about this track. it's nice but i don't like it that much.

I merely stated that i found it hard to find emotion in such a quantized static and soulless production. And it is obvious those programmed drums were meant to sound real, but they don't. I suppose if you aren't familiar with live music, this would not bother you. But when something is trying to pass of as acoustic and sounds the opposite because of the producers lack of knowledge in how real instruments are played , it doesn't' work and ruins the track,

I posted the other video to show what humans sound like. There is a huge difference. One sounds static and lifeless.

If you had the slightest ing clue who Joe Claussell is, you'd probably realise how stupid you sound right now.

I know that those drums are trying to sound like a real instrument but they don't for reasons Icould go into detail but won't because it will just be chinese to everyone. I can only infer that this failed attempt stems from a lack of knowledge. Which isn't so bad in itself but when you don't realize it and keep the ty programming instead of getting someone to either play it or program it properly, you get something like this. I don't know one person that wasn't an EDM fan that would hear this and not get a weird feeling that this just doesn't sound right. I find EDM fans a little less sensitive to elements that make live music and the imperfections humans tend to bring to it great.

I don't like the track for the reasons i mentioned. I sounds like an EDM producer trying to not do EDM. And no , never heard of the guy. Searching on google, still don't know anything about him. Is there something i should know about him ? All i seem to get are mentions of him being a dj and EDM tracks.

His brother is a percussionist, he has worked with renowned percussionists and he himself is a percussionist who has provided live drums on a number of classic records. To suggest that Joe Claussell lacks knowledge of "how real instruments are played" is a laughable statement.

I don't see how this changes the track and reasons I find it lacking. I said this gives me the impression he doesn't. Playing a bongo is a little different from playing a drumset but that doesn't really explain the lack of groove, only the weird drum programming that sounds synthetic while trying to be authentic. I could not find anything about him in any of the modern drummer archives. Because you play doesn't mean you play well.

Body & Soul are doing a gig at Amsterdam Dance Event in October. Early bird tickets got sold out in no time. Joe Claussell for the mothering win, I'm psyched to finally witness him in action.

It's going to be (yes, I'm going to use the word here) epic!

I haven't checked out all his material though.. what do you guys think his best work is?
Dykes_on_Jay
