Posted this to my FB too. So let's talk about DJ Mag for a minute here. Now I I feel the same way about it as most DJ's do, but here's my 2 cents as to why you SHOULD vote.
DJ Mag is a popularity contest. We all know this. However, this popularity contest also serves right for fans to really give our 2 cents as to whom we really respect in the scene. Over the years my picks have rarely changed. None of the DJ's I ever vote for are high ranked, or even ranked at all, and it's quite frustrating as both an artist & a fan to see the same 10 names jostle for position in the top 10 year after year.
Now what most people don't realize. Is that these so called Top 10 DJ's, are the ones that are, for lack of a better term, "raking it in", and pushing artist booking fees through the roof. Not only are they "raking it in", but they set the bar for how much all other listed DJ's would receive (per gig).
The unfortunate thing about all of this, is that A LOT of our so-called favorite DJ's/producers do not make this list. Let's face it, considering how many DJ/Producers there really are on this planet, to choose only 100, there's countless that would be left out. Now because everyone's focus lies on the Top 100, all these "left-out" DJ/Producers, no matter how insanely good they are, are now fighting to make only a fraction of what there is to be made as if they were a Top 100 DJ.
Simply put, not only is DJ Mag is a popularity contest, but also a wage scale. Easily understandable though right? It's comparable to any major corporation or business, the higher up the ladder, the more money you make. Simple. However the big difference is that in the real world of business or any other hierarchy, it's about the greater the effort, the greater the reward. DJ Mag... not so much. But that's a whole other discussion.
The point I'm trying to make is that even though you may hate the poll and what it stands for, it still affects artist's lives on a greater scale than you might think.
When you vote for DJ Mag Top 100, please consider who you think really deserves a shot on to making this list, and not those who you know are already "guaranteed" a spot. No matter how much you really love them, but voting for artists in the Top 10 is just throwing away your vote. This only results on them making maybe $5K-$10k on top of their already $40k+ price-tag, and causing higher ticket prices, meanwhile some of the best artists are struggling to make $2k or even less.
I support DJ's who I consider to be the cream of the crop in regards to talent, hard work, passion.
This year my top vote goes out to someone that I've gotten to know personally, and have witnessed first hand, the talent and the desire. Arnej.
He's supported me with the heartfelt praise and shares the same passion and hope for music as I do. He is someone who contributes the best he can to promote a positive movement, and I wish him the best of luck in this years poll. He DESERVES to be recognized.
ps. Not to mention the kinds of ways this could help the scene within Toronto itself. We need to promote more, that we have good artists here, of all genres. It's those non-Top 10/100 artists who really rely on our votes.
Flame suit on, let's get ready to rumble. :thepirate |

I'll vote for anyone that can operate a turntable, unfortunately there are less than 10 people in the world that can these days.
Imo The djs/producers that deserve our "support" are the ones that give back, and not only take and take. There is way too much selfishness. But I definitely wont be voting in this organized hole. |

This voting poll also sucks because you are required to have Facebook in order to vote. However that is an even crazier situation altogether. FB is taking over the world!
So ya tried to vote but couldn't, but my top three would have been Tim Green, Jimmy Van M, and Deetron, have kept to up to date with the top 100 list but I don't think I have ever seen any of their names pop up on there |

| Kris you bring up some great points in your post above. I was not going to vote this year but after reading your post, I think i have to agree. I will be basing my vote this year on not my favourite djs however those who have dramatically impacted my view of music this year. |

I don't read DJ Mag ever so I won't be voting...
Also, I don't really agree with these types of polls in general... |

but how will you know who to like? How will you ever be accepted by the masses if you don't know who is the greatest DJ? |

That's when I stopped voting. I don't care about the poll much but I cared about my actual favourite DJs enough to take the time to vote in order to benefit them (basically what OP is talking about). The switch to voting through a Facebook app is absolute BS, why should they need access to all my info and use my account for their revenue so I can vote? Shameless move on DJ mag's part imo and enough to push me away from the thing altogether (not that much of a push was needed). |
