what exactly is "echostage"? a new club? concept?

and miami locals are really on point too - space has been killing it down there by just having their locals play 2 or 3 nights of the month and then have them support bigger name DJs.

If he's not then his left hand would be his "stranger" hand, which is hard to give up, too :p

I've heard a couple of comments about how great Space is on this site recently, but when I was there during WMC this year, I wasn't impressed. The crowd wasn't great. Most looked like they thought it would be a hiphop club...

Next time I head down for a vacation, I'll have to give it another go.

well, WMC doesn't count! that's a stand-alone week. ironically enough, half the people in miami for WMC are from NYC lol.

on a regular basis, i think space is the best club in the country. the music is always on point. they had a night there this summer with:

guy gerber -> nic fanciulli -> joris voorn in the terrace and marcel dettman in the techno room. that's BONKERS.

there are definitely some ghetto/hoochie downtown miami people there, but every club has its downs. sound system is on point and the place doesn't get going until late late. i'd say it's packed by 4am and peak time is around 8am. chus + ceballos, mark knight, etc regularly do marathon sets there until 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

it's only open saturdays and yeah, the main room downstairs is a hop hop room. louis puig, the guy running it, knows what he's doing. 12 years running and still killing it. his new thing is bring a more popular DJ for the 2-5am slot (laidback luke this weekend, roger sandchez, etc) to bring in a newer crowd. once they get off stage and the more techno DJs come on for after hours, he's already got the kids there and they become space-heads instantly.

i wish new york had a true after hours club like that :(

It honestly sounds like if I go see a show anywhere but Toronto or NY, I will be severely disappointed.

Anyone comment on LA openers?

Nah, not at all. Opening DJing is a lost art, not everyone even likes it anymore, most don't (they find it boring)... I personally enjoy witnessing the art of someone setting up the stage with a good progressive set. May other cities I've been in, DJs will warm up the crowd in other ways: playing vocal and maybe cheesier songs the crowd may know to get them in the groove early for example. It works, gets the job done, sets up an energetic atmosphere, but yeah, different strokes for different folks!

For my own personal tastes, I've seen consistently amazing openers in Toronto and NY. But this might not be the same as your personal taste;)

THIS!!!

alot of new dj's really dont understand the idea of being an "opening dj"
they think its just a time for them to bang it out, rather than set up the night for the dj after them

I make it a point to get to see the openers here in NYC. Zack, Rory, James Gill, Brad Miller, they always warm up a crowd great. Micheal Gin has been doing a good job for the Esscala group too at their shows.

Werd. Space is definitely the best club I've ever been to in the United States. WMC is just a crazy week, all the venues are oversold (seemingly) and it just makes for some uncomfortable partying, unfortunately.

Really, there's no other club that I can think of that follows the Space formula. Go see a badass techno/house DJ on the terrace afterhours...it's just magic. Can't explain it.
