Does VSL server run on Thunderbolt though? I thought they used ethernet?
You spend so much time on these forums, that it seems like you have plenty of spare time to learn to build a system. It's easier than LEGO. Shouldn't take more than 30 mins to assemble a PC from scratch. But you could even buy a pre-built one. Windows is very much like Mac OS X these days.
Macintosh computers are so patronizing. They treat their customers as if they are idiots, and are not permitting user-upgradable parts any more. Soldered RAM and proprietary hard SATA connectors? Come on! |

ethernet.
I used to build pcs. I have built about 6 audio pcs before switching to mac. But that was with xp. Also , my apogee won't work in a pc. And that sound interface is about 6000$. And it requires pciex and with thunderbolt, you can still have pciex with sonnet type stuff. |

Well, if I was crossing over to PC, I would sell the Apogee and buy an RME UFX.
If you really wanted to stay Mac, then I wouldn't throw away the $1000 on repairs. I would just get a new Mac, but like I mentioned before, there are new updated models coming out soon.
Maybe we have to wait for 2013 for Mac Pro updates, but new iMacs and Mac Minis are due soon, and because they are not upgradable machines, its best to custom-order a spec of your requirement.
Apple may even incorporate touch screens on their new iMacs to compete with HP TouchSmart. They'd be stupid not to. |

the apogee is a little bit better than the UFX. I mean you are comparing apples and oranges.
I can record 100 tracks at 96 k without any strain. |

Ok first, don't feed the troll. He obviously knows all about interfaces and should probably just log in as urban ninja next time.
Second, why does a thread about macs always have to turn in to a PC vs Mac debate, with uninformed people (not you Richie) spouting nonesense?
A, It may only take 30mins (more like an hour but whatever) to physically build a PC but you forget it will be the best part of a day before windos is installed, along with all your drivers, and do all the you need to optimize it, and then get producing.
When I bought my Imac in 2008, I was producing within 23 minutes of opening the box. You cannot do that with a box of shiny PC parts, and god forbid you get given the wrong connector/ribbon cable or PSU or Memory etc.
and Mel, you seem to be the unluckiest mac owner in history. At work we have 17 macs. Have done for several years. We have had one (1) hardrive failure in four years and bear in mind these computers are fairly well abused. Look at the stats for mac failure rates compared to PC and I think you'll realize in half a second which one is the most reliable (by far). As you said, the Deathstar caused literally millions of people to have seriously ed computers.
Soldered RAM is certainly a mis-step but it's one model and the first time. I don't think they will repeat this mistake again, but even then when you're buying a macbook pro, and ram being as cheap as it is, you might as well max it out so what's the point in replaceable RAM? My imac has been maxed out on RAM since the day it arrived. Do I need to take out some to down grade it? no.
Proprietary SATA connectors are needed from an engineering standpoint so it makes sense (and you can get any adapters you need for a pittance). It's nothing all of the PC manufacturers haven't done at some point.
It's like all the people moaning now about the new lightning connector; the 30 pin was 9 years old, an adapter to make it backwards compatible is already available from apple, and a chinese knockoff will be here in a month.
Finally, onboard graphics are a terrible idea, so people should try to understand this technology before wasting screen space. It was one of the biggest differences in performance between the macbook and MBP ranges, and lumping the CPU by sharing GPU processes is not conducive to good performance on CPU critical tasks such as working with Audio.
@ Richie, stick with the apogee. There's very few interfaces in existence that are that rock solid with that low latency or allow you to run that many tracks. That problem you're having is odd - is it that same auto shutdown thing again?
@ Juan Paulino - I don't want to be the naysayer, but I can't help feeling you really should have waited just a few months. New macs (imac and Mac Pro) are just around the corner. |

| I been waiting for so long for a new mac pro i couldn't take it anymore. My parents said sell it one ebay then get a new one. I also drive a 370z and i live in a nice house. Money is not an issue. With the setup i have now as you see in the specs i'll be fine for a very long time. My only concern is when mac os 11 comes out its possible it might not be compatible with what i have and thus i should have waited. |

Can you run leapord on yurt Mac pro. For my 2011 Mac book, I had to use a work around to install it. I just don't see the advantage of any ode new OS' in terms of audio. iPad spelling ftw
I drivE a 300$ bicycle. I won't buy a car until I have kids. |

I own my house, have two cars and my own business, but I still don't make costly purchasing decisions.
Just like Richie spending daddy's money, I get the feeling it isn't your money either and I suppose therefore you couldn't give a , but I still don't believe in wasting money in that way. On premium grade columbian rage powder? certainly, but not on soon-to-be obsolete Apple hardware.
IMO, getting a mac pro now, is not worth the $1000 you'll lose in the resale of it in a couple of months. |

haha you wish ******.
When that time comes, i will be buying a submarine and building a studio inside. I'm a self made man. They did bail me out of a few legal jams but my parents were jews in the past lifetime. I've used foodbanks in the past so you. I just went from welfare to 70 000 to 120 000. So ya, i'm like a black guy who just released a platinum album. But on the topic,
my dad still makes more than ever despite being retired, and unless they give it all to my sister which is possible, i'm looking at 20 split 4 ways. Like i said, Self made.
Most of my money is taken care of by an accountant. My girlfriend was getting really annoyed with me withdrawing money and building bundles of cash.
Don't ask. I do weird . But i'm an angel. |
