Pre-recorded sets

I have a friend who swears that sets are pre-recorded. He has a hard time believing when the vocals are on a LED wall, that the set must be pre-recorded. I just dont believe that djs pre-record sets. I can see bad house djs doing it but I still don't think they would. To me that would take the fun of doing what you love.

I'm interested to see what you guys think about this topic since, most of you have been around a lot longer then I have in this music scene. I just cant believe a guy like Markus walking up there and hitting play (this convo started at Best Buy).

A-Track had a great article in the Huffington Post a couple months back about "Button Pushers".

This is one of the reasons why I don't go to massives anymore like EDC. The big headliners such as Tiesto, SHM, Deadmau5's have a concert like production with all of their visuals, lighting cues, and CO2 blasts (or fire) that are choreographed. So there is going to be times when the DJ is not mixing. But the dirty little secret is how much of their sets are pre-programed?

Also, I totally agree with A-Track...if you don't have this big stage set up and your just hitting the decks there is no excuse for a DJ to play the same songs/remixes set after set. This is just plain lazy.

Doesn't the person who works the lights for a venue also have control of the LED displays? I mean, if a DJ is known to be hammering certain tracks, I'm sure that person will find out ahead of time to throw something like that on the display.

I'm sure some Djs pre record sets too though.

I'm not saying they don't at some point for big shows. But to for him to say half the sets at EZ were pre-recorded is a large # of artists.

Honestly if a set sounds perfect with absolutely no mistakes it's most likely pre-planned (although not necessarily pre-recorded). I hear subtle mistakes from even the best DJs (Carl Cox, Digweed, Chris Liebing etc..) which makes me happy since I know they're being human and taking the risk.

My understanding is the light people will do the visuals if the DJ doesn't do their own. I would think something like EZ a lot of the bigger names do their own stuff, a la Above and Beyond, etc. As for pre-recorded sets, I'm still holding out hope no one is posing behind the decks at an event like EDC or EZ and doing an entire set pre-recorded...

Seb thanks for sharing the vid. Nice to see Armin does it without having to pre-record stuff. I wonder if that goes for pyrotechnics and the like though? Does he do that at his shows/sets?

Exactly this. Whenever I listen to liebings sets, sometimes you can hear that the beatmatching is off by just a tad and he adjusts it after few secs.

Puts a smile on my face

I remember standing on the balcony at Pacha, above the booth, watching Carl Cox throw CDs into the CD player literally 15-20 seconds before he brought it in the mix. He is an absolute monster.

Isn't his nick the 3deck monster or something like that?
