But why would you willingly put yourself in that situation? What if money's tight and something happens and you suddenly find yourself in immediate need of cash that you don't have?

I personally feel that exercise is important and if that means not spending on other things, so be it. Health is more important than a little debt. Although he mentions his love of beer and they probably just cancel out health wise.

You don't have to spend $500 to get proper exercise. He also hasn't clarified if it's equipment or tickets.

i pay $500 To play once a week from now until April. if i really need money for an emergency i always have my rrsps...which has about 10 grand. ill be fine.

500 for physical health, and being part of a group. Thebenifits are worth 500$. I would put that expense up there with food. Unless you have kids and they want to play hockey.
