Stickin' it to Big Popcorn.

DENVER (CBS4)- A Centennial man has won a $7 million verdict in the so-called “microwave popcorn lung” case.

Fifty-nine-year-old Wayne Watson had sued the manufacturer Gilster-Mary Lee, also Kroger and Dillon Foods.

He had purchased the popcorn at King Soopers.

Watson’s attorneys claimed there should have been a warning on the label. But lawyers for the supermarket chain responded saying they “might have well have warned that there are aliens popping out of the bags because there’s just as much support for that.”

“It’s kind of a weird story isn’t it? A guy gets sick by breathing in the toxic fumes of dicetyl that is on butter-flavored microwave popcorn in the sanctity of his own kitchen,” said Watson.

Dicetyl is a compound that has now been removed from microwave butter-flavored popcorn. It has been linked to lung problems for workers in plants that produce microwave popcorn.

Watson was diagnosed with respiratory problems in 2007 after years of inhaling the smell of artificial butter on the microwaved popcorn he would eat daily. Watson said he ate about two bags of popcorn per day.

“Who would ever reasonably think that popping popcorn in your own home, no matter how it’s packaged or processed, would all of a sudden turn into an agent for toxic lung disease,” Watson told CBS4 in 2010.

Only in America will you be awarded 7 million dollars for eating two bags of popcorn each day.

What's the problem here? The manufacturer used toxic material in its products, and the guy got sick. Fair play. And at that point you might as well sue for as much as you can, no?

What if I drank two cases of beer every day for a decade and ballooned to 400lbs and suffered a myriad of obesity-related health issues? Do I deserve a huge paycheck for making ty, idiot decisions with my consumption? Two bags of popcorn a day is unreasonable. Pretty sure 'serving suggestion' appears on most every box's nutritional facts. :p

Too much water is toxic to humans, and a responsible person knows not to drink it until they're sick.

I'm actually cooking up a plan to eat black licorice every day for a few months and see who I can wring for a lump of ing idiot cash. Provided I survive, that is.

I can't wait to get hepatitis and sue China.

Pretty sure China is already its own warning label, that's why the flag is bright red.

Taking a taxi here is like not wearing a condom in Senegal.

The only reason he got sick is because he subjected himself to the same amount of dicetyl as if he worked at the popcorn plant. If it wasn't lung disease it'd be clogged arteries and all that fat diseases.

Anywhoo... Why does the article first say he's a 100 years old and then the next line it says 59?

Sitting on his work bench,
Eating kettle corn with mad intent.
Hey, Popcorn Lung.
Butter running to his toes.
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes.
Hey, Popcorn Lung.
Feeding like a hungry duck
Spending all his money to the last buck.
Whoa, Popcorn Lung

as dumb as this is, if there is a link to the chemical and the condition and he ate enough of it to cause said condition without any other factors that might of caused it, seems pretty logical. 2 bags a day is not obscene by american standards.
