PARTY OF THE YEAR!!!!!
:eyes: :eyes:

This man took us into a journey last night.

I haven't heard music that good in ages! Guy J delivered such a consistent yet versatile set.. This man really knows how to program a set and keep his audience eager to hear more. He had everyone hypnotized from the moment he got on until his very last tune. Hats off to him for blessing us with such wonderful music.

I also got to catch Andrew's set. It was my first time hearing him and I must say, I was impressed! Quality tunes and solid mixing. He's also quite skilled when it comes to his productions. I was hoping to hear this, but I might have missed it while having a smoke.

TAs were out in full force yesterday. It was nice seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new peeps.

Great night!

Hey y'all,

I thought I'd let everyone know the drama in the booth that prevented Guy from being able to properly play until 230 or so.

Overall an incredible night! I had a blast opening up the night (recorded live, will post later). Andrew dropped an incredible set (recorded live), and much longer than planned.

Guy started setting up around 130. He uses Ableton, a UC-33 midi controller and an audio interface with 1 channel into the mixer. When he plugged his UC-33 into his laptop it didn't recognize the device. We tried and tried (restarting Ableton, rebooting) but it just wouldn't recognize. It was a little confusing as Guy played the night before with no issues. Luckily I run nearly the same setup: Ableton, a Launchpad, a 4 channel audio interface, and a UC-33. We tried plugging my UC-33 into his laptop and it still wouldn't recognize. Totally bizarre.

I then had an idea: use the 'Collect All and Save' feature in Ableton to save Guy's entire set to a single project file, copy it over to my laptop, open it in Ableton, and hope it all loads up identically to how Guy had it saved on his laptop. Yes, a bit of a stretch, considering Guy had about 6GB of audio in this one Ableton project. It was worth a try, so I had Oz grab a 8GB USB stick. We started the process of saving a consolidated project file (took about 15 minutes).

Guy then started playing using his fingers on the trackpad of his Macbook manually. The transition from Andrew, who had now played until 2am, was seamless, didn't skip a beat. Not everyone may realize it, but playing live on Ableton like this is BRUTAL, especially the way Guy is set up. Volume changes, EQ changes, FX, all had to be done with his fingers. Amazing how good it sounded considering he was playing like this.

The save finished, we then started to copy the file over to a USB stick (took about 20 minutes). Finally I plugged the USB stick into my laptop and started copying the files to my desktop (took 5 minutes). I opened the project in Ableton... MISSING FILES! I ran a scan of my drive (took 5 minutes) and BINGO, there it was. I plugged my UC-33 in and all the mappings were good.

Guy transitioned from his laptop to mine, again, seamlessly, didn't skip a beat. He then proceeded to rip Toika a new one until 5am. Unbelievably huge sound, incredible set. For those of you wondering, yes, Guy made me delete the entire set from my Macbook... AND empty the trash ;)

I'll be posting my set later today, and I'll let Andrew decide if he wants to post his. Unfortunately since I had to load up Guy's set on my laptop I couldn't capture his set. :(

Really bizzare problem. Must be some sort of a firmware glitch. Regardless, Guy blew my mind. What a perfect set!

So happy that everything worked out at the end. At first I thought he is having problems with the soundcard and not the controller. It was indeed one strange problem.:p Really enjoyed your set btw sir.;)

Jam packed Toika with wicked vibe. Dustin and Andrew with pretty much near perfect warm up sets, and a good warm up set is a rare art these days. Those 5 Heinekens for 27.50 goes down way too fast.

Guy J putting on a show, despite the technical difficulties. I've seen many DJs lose their composure to frustration when there is a technical difficulty but Guy J took it like a pro and still put on possibly one of most brilliant prog sets I've heard in Toronto in a long time. And it was pretty much straight up prog, with very little of tech or any other genre. Excellent programming, although took a little to build up, but after Lost & Found, it was a journey of prog bliss. Oh, how I missed a proper prog like this in Toronto, the land of tech.

Left around 430 and the club was still like 75% packed. We've been starving for something like this for a long time, and Toika is just the right size for parties like this. I look forward to hearing other prog DJs, such as Henry Saiz, Cid Inc, Eelke Kleijn, etc. (Hear me out, Oz) ;) (Oh, and maybe a Funktion One at Toika?) lol

I set such a high expectation for Guy J, and I was a little afraid it's a bit too high, but boy, he did not disappoint!

PS: TA reunion galore. Awesome catching up with some people I haven't seen in a while, and as well meeting some new people. Though apparently I disappoint people by not wearing a party hat lol
