Switching from CDJ's to Digital... which way to go? (Ableton/Traktor?)

Ok so ive been heavily debating switching over to digital DJing. Burning CD's is so 2004.

Theres a million resources online I can google to get this answer, but this forum is struggling to stay afloat, so I figured maybe this would bring up some good discussion.

Im currently on a Xone:92 and a couple CDJ850s. I figured Id sell the set up and go for a Xone:db2 and a couple xone:k2. Id also pick up a decent laptop solely for DJ purposes.

Now software... what are the pros/cons of Ableton vs Traktor?

Im leaning towards Ableton, only because I have a little bit of experience with it.

I should probably make the switch soon before CDJ's have zero resale value.

Keep your Xone, sell the CDJs and upgrade to a pair of 850's

Are you looking to DJ 'conventionally'? As awesome as Ableton is, I wouldn't really recommend it over Traktor if you're looking for a traditional approach.

You're familiar with Ableton already, so I won't really get into it, but as you know Live is a production/performance software, and while you could DJ with it, that's not really the specific purpose of the program. The initial template you'll need to make for DJing will no doubt be a bitch to setup/map with your mixer/controllers, and overall the Ableton interface isn't really that appealing or intuitive when used this way imo. Also, if you're looking to do really specific effect combinations and/or midi mappings, you'll no doubt need to learn max/max4live or python, which is a bitch of a learning curve. The midi mapping functionality with ableton is pretty , out of the box, imo.

Contrast that with Traktor which is designed to be used as a contemporary dj software that gives you all the conventional features you'd expect, in a pretty concise package. The midi mapping capabilities are far superior out of the box as well. I think a lot can be said for using Traktor and routing specific effects/channels through ableton, that's fairly straightforward and gives you a bunch of extra options. But, choosing Ableton instead of Traktor for djing just seems like it might not be worth the headache, especially considering that Traktor will natively do what you're looking for.

He could use the Serato "Bridge" with Ableton then as well, I haven't tried it myself but apparently it works quite well.

Man can I buy your CDJ's then? I want to go back to CDJ's. Been missing them ever since I made the switch to Traktor around a year ago :(

More on topic: If you want to go the Traktor route, I suggest keeping your 92 (fukin amazing piece of technology) and going with the X1. I have amazing control with my X1, with the slight exception that there isn't a jogwheel.

My bad, typo. Theyre actually 850's.

To be honest, the most appealing aspect of the digital route, is the fact that I can have my entire music collection in front of me, instead of 3 cd binders.

Features such as looping, and running samples from other tracks for extended mixouts/mix ins is also appealing.

I have been contemplating going for a digital live route myself, but honestly if its just mixing A/B its pretty pointless. Hurts my soul to see that.

Something like Dubfire's setup would be sweet.

Im gonna be thinking about this more often, I want to have my new setup/show ready after the new year.

+1 That is a huge deal to me. To be able to have all your collections right in front of you.:)
