Like Acton said... depends on your position; if you are upwardly mobile a corporate environment often offers more opportunity. It also depends a lot on the corporation and industry. There are many large corporations that do not have the stereotypical corporate environment (for example; I let my employees make their own hours within reason, work collaboratively, even help train and evaluate one another). Certainly, there are places with a highly regimented corporate culture that many would find unpleasent to work for but this is fadding very quickly as most management theory tends to support creating highly dynamic, less formal, more colaborative environments with more focus on empowering front line employees with accountability for the results of their initiatives rather than focusing on how well they follow processes. |
I like this. My line of thinking too.
I enjoy corporate. There's tonnes of growth potential and the constant hustle and bustle is stimulating and generally exciting. It can be a great place to learn too as the L&D budgets are huge, then later on in your career you decide whether to go with a smaller company or stick with the big guys. |

Were you not reading Moral Hazard's post? Corporations are mainly moving away from the harsh employee management practices of the past and into a more collaborative, open-minded approach. I work for a very large corporation, but my specific division is rather small. I have friendly managers who want you to work hard but be happy. As such, I can work from home whenever I want. |

I allow my team to work from home on occasion as well. I also refuse to micromanage; I firmly believe that if you give your team benchmarks to reach they will find the most efficient and effective way to reach them... not everyone works the same so they tend to do better when allowed to work in the manner that best suits them. Additionally, more and more managers that I am exposed to see their role as being one of service to their employees and employers than authority over their employees. My job is to ensure that my team has the skills, tools, and resources necessary to achieve the goals that we as a corporation have set. I measure performance not so I can wield the hammer if they fail to meet their objectives but so I can step in to assist them where they may fall short. Sometimes that assistance will necessitate harsh action but usually coaching, training, and resource reallocation (tweeking if you will) is all that is needed. |

that's the opposite of my boss. work from home ??? lol...i wish... i was very ill couple of weeks ago and emailed by boss telling her that i will work from home. i put in 10 hours each day for 2 the days that i was out, and when i got my paycheck, they still considered it as 2 sick days. why was i working then ??? it's little like that which takes your motivation away and kinda makes you not care about the job as much... |

A company actually paid me 200$ to show up dressed the part and sit in front of a computer doing nothing for 2 hours, just to show a potential investor that they had a foreign employee (status thing.) Confucius bless Chinamerica!
I've done the corporate thing before. It's ok for a cheque and benefits but it feels like working in a salt mine after awhile. IT sales are only fun for so long.
edit: The company I worked for gave us tons of perks too...free gym, medical staff on site, boatload of activities, great food, great performance incentives, free dry cleaning and more. It just isn't for anyone. I like being my own boss.
I'll admit the the contact i made will help me in future endeavors. So do it until you can't take it anymore, get a good reference, and network like it was going out of style. |
