bro, you've been playing that song in every set since I saw you the first time (2004).
Amen. It's not why I didn't go see him, but I completely agree with you. Stop reaching into the same bag of predictability.
This reminds me of when jon jon kept playing that track at zone over and over again. There was even discussion about it on TA in which he admit he didn't even like it but played it because they crowd went nuts over it. To me, playing tracks you don't love goes against the whole point of being a dj imo. He finally said he was retiring the track for a while... then played it the next weekend lol.

I feel its a fine line here. The whole point of being a DJ is making sure the people on that dance floor are happy. You will never make everyone happy but if the majority love it, you are doing the right thing. Every DJ has had to play tracks that perhaps don't quite cut it as far as their preferences go and that is really part and parcel of being a DJ. There is certainly the issue of over doing it and relying on a particular track (aka Westworld or Hugs and Kisses) to get "cheap" pops from the crowd and that is something that should be considered.
However should he never play these tracks again cuz they are so "yester-year"....
they are classics and people WANT to hear them. It evokes nostalgia and usually brings a good moment to the dance floor so every now and then...drop em.

Yet it also alienates people as well, because they don't want to hear the same old thing again and again....

Agreed. People want to hear classics. A great example is Eric Prydz' "Call On Me." I doubt Eric has dropped that track since 2007, but I was really hoping he was going to pull a surprise at IDentity this summer. Call On Me doesn't fit with his current sound, but you know the crowd would have gone berserk the moment the first chord struck. The song would lose its appeal if Eric incorporated it into every performance, but it would be awesome if he occasionally unleashed the track as an opener or encore.
As for Lawler, I'm excited for the Toronto stop on the LiFE tour, whenever that may be.

I don't see it that way. Playing tracks you don't even like shouldn't be in your binder to begin with. That's what separates underground club djs from wedding djs and top 40 club djs. Sure, make the crowd happy and dance all night, but do it with tracks you're passionate about. You shouldn't have to alter your sound to make a crowd happy. If you have to, it's not your crowd.
As far as playing tracks from yester-year. It's fine once in a while and should never be frowned upon. But they shouldn't show up on a regular basis (the same track). Feature a classic or two in every set if you want, but to use the same ones over and over again is boring and predictable.

It is always great to have a few classic tracks thrown into a set but you can't keep throwing in the same couple of classics...change it up every once in awhile. Deko-ze is great for doing that....he will throw in tracks that are over 10 years old...heck I've heard him throw in tracks from the early 90s....some get it and love others just think its another great track.
But there is also the fun of throwing in a cheesy classic. I love Sandstorm but I fully admit it is a bit cheesy yet I love it when out of the blue a DJ will throw it into a set.

You say that like it's something that has happened to you more than once :conf:

Made the trip up from Montreal for the Weekend to visit our crew here, flew right into to the Downtown Airport, soo sweet....really makes a big difference, hit up the LCBO.....got geared up and made our way to our booth. Ran us $80 entrance include with three bottles included. Really nice place, reminded me The old Tribe Hyper club in Montreal, just MUCHHHHH bigger.
Barely left the Dance floor, Lawler played a solid pumping club set, yes he pulled up some out a few signature staple tracks, he always has them, but for the most part it wasn't over done. Seems to really enjoy playin in Toronto, I remember him telling me it was one of his favorite cities to play in a couple years back.
Great crowd for the night, energy was there, lot of high fives, smiles, girls dancing, had fun with the Toronto crowd. Made a youtube....52 seconds Black ((Stereo)) be Yourself t-shirt. Meet a lot cool people, looking forward to coming back and ripping it up again soon
He played this one, always plays....from his lights out 3 compliation in 2005.
Another oldie, Westworld Remix....he doesn't play this one !?
