Abandoned buildings

Is anyone else into ignored, decrepit, run-down structures? I love them. It's like I can feel their soul the most in their forgottenness. I think it's something along the lines of that one feeling I can only get in winter. It's hard to describe... it's not negative, but it's bleak. Sometimes I find myself googling pics of stuff like this late at night. I know I'm no the only one overall, but is anyone else here into it too?

At first I thought it was Chernobyl.

Yeah, I love them. I grew up in an old mining village and as a teenager I used to go exploring the derelict industrial buildings at the edge of the forest. I think the feeling you're trying to describe is what the Japanese call "wabi-sabi": the melancholic beauty of transience. It's definitely akin to that hugely atmospheric feeling I get around autumn time.

There's a Last.fm group called "Abandoned Places" that has massive image galleries you'll probably love: http://www.last.fm/group/Abandoned+Places

I also love music that evokes this feeling, especially around this time of year. I made a "post apocalyptic" mix that has is brimming with this mood: http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=580884

Yes! Although I've never explored industrial or commercial buildings. I've always loved things like old barns and empty century homes. In the summer I take lots of drives out in the country and have often stopped to explore random abandoned places. I think you can definitely feel the soul of a place. I find it fascinating. :)

There is an old, abandoned rubber factory in downtown Denver:

It's really high-profile, too, as the lightrail into downtown passes right by it.

The post-Katrina Six Flags was the best one

Not exactly the same thing, but I loved seeing the pics from the Russian blogger who sneaked into the missile factory:

Yeah its funny how I really feel the soul of a place the most when it's in ruins.
