as long as sd starts getting some talent to come through. voyeur, fluxx, and stingaree bring in the frat bro and top 40 djs throughout the week. its pretty annoying. lovelife tries to get some underground monthly...but their el camino location is pretty small.

How come no one uses Spin anymore? (Eventvibe has done a couple random events here and there) I always hear stories how epic it was back in the (Montage?) days and can only imagine how it was when its packed.

Voyeur and Fluxx wernt around so it was the only big EDM option other than once a month that On Brodway brought someone. There were a TON of epic nights there when Eventvibe and Giant were there. Belo was the same way when Giant was there, so many epic nights!

EDM clubs in SD need the downtown run off crowd to survive, people won't drive out of downtown for EDM that much.

I said it years ago in a thread, that it was only a matter of time before one of the clubs On Brodway, Spin, Fluxx and Voyeur was going to fizzle out. Too much EDM in a non EDM city like SD.

Voyeur was the only survivor, Fluxx isn't always EDM and On Brodway and Spin are well...done for.

Bassmnt will survive for a little bit because of Insomniac, but eventually they will cut their losses and change format to top 40. I hope I am wrong there and they stay around for a while and non-trance acts start performing as well giving us 2 options here in SD. But I doubt it.

If On Brodway comes back or 4th n B becomes a huge EDM club, I see the same future with them and eventually changing format. SD sucks when it comes to EDM, but again I hope my predictions are wrong. Last time I also predicted this and I also hoped to be wrong...but I was right. :(

Spin just needs a good promoter with connections and a willingness to build an identity.

It's still, imo, the best and most complete EDM venue in San Diego - over FLUXX, Voyeur, Belo (back in the day), 4th & B (back in the day), Thin / Onyx, OBEC (back in the day).

I'm going to go against Nero on this one - I saw it packed for weeks when Giant and Eventvibe maintained a weekly presence and really had promotions working. People will come, if the party is good, the talent isn't completely unknown, and you legit promote -- not just e-promote on Facebook, but put boots on the ground. Unfortunately for me these days, I just don't have the time to do it for the venue anymore.

I saw it packed for weeks as well, they would bring the talent that was in LA Saturday night on Friday. That worked very well.

BUT there was no Voyeur back then that was doing that model of bringing the talent that was in LA that same weekend. Voyeur does that a lot. And Fluxx brings in EDM acts as well. Which makes me think that Spin won't thrive just because of the other options that are in downtown.

only reason spin was packed was Tim bringing the dj's he had contracts with.
i remember...i remember being on spring break in 2009 and spending two weekenda in sd

I can add a little something to this topic. I had multiple DJ residencies at Montage (now Spin) from about 2003-2005 and I was the assistant GM there briefly in 2005 before the owner died. So I've studied how the venue works on a few levels/roles. In my opinion Montage was so great and named Playboy club of the year a couple times back then because there wasn't much of a downtown gaslamp club scene at all, and especially for the EDM sound. Back then people were ok with being at one place all night. As places in the gaslamp started to open and EDM started to find homes there, the attendance at Montage (now Spin) suffered. I think one of the reasons was that people could club hop to multiple venues in the gaslamp, which someone said above. Promoters could more easily pull people off the street into the venues in the gaslamp because of the foot traffic. Because of its location and no foot traffic at all, Montage (now Spin) became a destination club - one where you go and stay the night. I still think it is the best venue in San Diego because of its warehouse feel and sound system and history. But the venue doesn't really come alive unless there is a big act playing with several hundred people in attendance because something amazing happens there when the lower level and 2nd level are filled with people that is hard to put into words. But it is hard to feel that when only the lower level is open and attendance is smaller.

This bubble has to burst soon...just heard LED promoting Kaskade and their MDW Sports Arena thing on Jammin Z90. The last event at Spin I was at was M.O.R.P.H. like as year ago and it was a blast!

I agree, as a clubbers club Spin is the best. Big dance floor 2 different rooms a good sound system and most importantly the capability of going all night!!

Ah, that was Tristan and Tomas' show probably. Tristan D is on Z90 now - with DJ Ideal (Tomas).

Yea, that MORPH show was New Dimension, but they weren't really getting the pull they needed with Victor, and funds dried up.

Like I mentioned, Spin needs boots on the ground that PUSH the shows. Evites don't cut it. As a promoter over the past years in SD, and an event coordinator, I know first hand how hard this town is for people. The ones that succeed really push hard for years, become specific and niche, or have the money and marketing team that works hard to build an identity quickly. In any of those scenarios, its all about hard work.
