Agree.
Conspiracy theorists are as dangerous as corrupted government officials.
It's the cool thing to be these days. |

"let's not trivialize his suicide"
his suicide is trivial.
and as for the 'it's stupid to be illegal' argument -- i'm gonna go ahead and disagree. databases like jstor are invaluable research tools that universities pay for subscriptions to. i don't see the 'it should be free so he was right!' as a valid argument in any way shape or form. |

That's because you're a fag.
So only people who pay $50,000 a year to go to a school like MIT should be allowed to access that kind of information. Sounds pretty reasonable.

The fact that he was being tried as if he were some sort of cyber terrorist is completely asinine. |

I had access to JSTOR while I went to UF.
I think it's bogus you don't get to keep your subscription after you graduate, though.
Lame. |

Indeed. Be a much better world without them. |

LAdazeNYnights , why such a poor attitude towards this? Saying this happens all the time isn't an excuse to do nothing. It's sad that we pick and chose which cases we decide to bring to light, but this is an effective way to get a lot of attention. Maybe if we win this one, prosecutors will start thinking twice before abusing their powers.
Arguing about whether what he did was right or wrong is trivial.
The argument should be about the punishment fitting the crime. |

i'm sure the government wanted to go to trial as much as the guy that offed himself did, which is to say not at all. i'm sure the charges were merely tactics for a more government-favorable plea agreement.
the guy was depressed and couldn't deal with the pressure, although great, was unbearable for him. others have endured greater pressure without cracking.
btw isn't julian assange still holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy?

Seriously? The government wants to take any and every opportunity to make example of anyone the deem to be "cyber terrorists." He even tried to plea to lesser charges that wouldn't involve prison time, and the government wouldn't accept them.
I really hope anonymous s some up over this past just posting a quasi-memorial on MIT's website. |

Why even bother saying this? It doesn't mean anything and just makes you sound ignorant when it comes to mental illness. |

| quote: | | After Swartz's death, one of his lawyers revealed that the prosecutors "told him two days before Swartz’s death that Swartz would have to spend six months in prison and plead guilty to [all] 13 charges" in order to avoid trial.[49] At trial, he faced a total of 35 years imprisonment.[44] |
like i wrote, a tactic. |

Well you started it off nicely with "the guy was depressed and couldn't deal with the pressure, although great, was unbearable for him", but then you decide to belittle him by comparing him to others. |

| These media giants spend tons of money to buy our politicians to get them to vote positively in favor of the laws they want to see pushed through. The United States is in a sad state of affairs. |
