[WE THE PEOPLE] Sign the Petition

Lagrangian
Remove United States District Attorney Carmen Ortiz from office for overreach in the case of Aaron Swartz.
It is too late to do anything for Aaron Swartz, but they who used the powers granted to them by their office to hound him into a position where he was facing a ruinous trial, life in prison and the ignominy and shame of being a convicted felon; for an alleged crime that the supposed victims did not wish to prosecute.

A prosecutor who does not understand proportionality and who regularly uses the threat of unjust and overreaching charges to extort plea bargains from defendants regardless of their guilt is a danger to the life and liberty of anyone who might cross her path.

Don't get me wrong, what happened in this situation sucks, but there are a lot of other people that have been tried and convicted in the same manner with which he was treated. Sign a petition that applies to all other prosecuting attorneys in the countless number of similar cases, if you're going to sign this one.

Finally, a rational response to this...
He did something stupid and then couldn't handle the heat that followed.

He didn't do something stupid. He did something that's stupid to be illegal.

Whoa now, I think you might be misunderstanding what I'm trying to say. He did something illegal, yes. He should be punished, yes. Do I think that his punishment was overblown? Absolutely, but this is far from the first time that anybody has had an overblown punishment from the government. All I was trying to say is that there are far too many people acting like this sort of thing rarely ever happens, yet it happens all the time.

Also, who cares if he couldn't handle the heat? A lot of people wouldn't be able to, so lets not trivialize his suicide. You don't know how you would act in that situation yourself.

No matter what the law is?

The simplest answer here is, "The law's the law". I don't necessarily agree with it in this case, but that doesn't change the fact that he was busted for breaking the law and punished (albeit too strongly) for it.
