As opposed to cookie cutter tech house? Seems like that's been in circulation for a lifetime..

I am not a fan of this guy all the times I have seen him have been a major disappointment, but the way he played at uniun was something else, he took Carlo Lio's fusion of Tech house and Techno and ran with it. I was surprised with the crowd reaction because they were all in to like you would see at footwork. Great show.

Wow.

There are some people that I respect on this message board in terms of musical opinion saying some whack stuff regarding tribal/tech house.

Tribal was popular in 2006, but it's 2013. It had it's time. Victor playing tech house isn't for everyone. Victor's nights, especially at Stereo, are more for the musically educated clubber, it's very cerebral the way he plays.

Tribal is very easy to play/program. Drums the whole night, not really hard to play that + everything sounds the same. You can say the same thing about tech house, but there are nuances with tech house that people following Victor seem to enjoy compared to tech house.

He plays different styles of tech house, he'll start with some rolling deep tech, then some bangers, then some organic sounding tech. Much like tribal, tech house is based on the build up and the drop, but the difference in tech house is it's more subtle compared to a 90 second drop with a repetitive pattern.

It's different strokes for different folks, but tribal is really dated, can someone name me 5 tribal bangers released in the last six months? I can name you 20 Victor tech house bangers released in the same time frame.

Chus and Ceballos play the closest thing to tribal, but now it's deeper more Baleric sounding, even at Stereo.

Tribal was made popular again in the mid 2000's, but it was huge for a long time before that. Lawler and C&C made their names with it, and before them Junior Vasquez and Tenaglia made it their mainstays. There are countless others as well. It can be played very well, with direction and soul. It seems that many have turned their back on it for the past few years, but that doesn't mean it's dead. There's lots of great tech-house, lots of great tribal, and tons of generic releases of both.

ehhh depends on where you hear them. i bet at stereo they play a lil bit more underground and get nuts. alot of other places they been playing some pretty generic tech house stuff, like really boring for the most part. i would say dj vibe is more of a percussion based dj than c&c

C&C play cheese. Saw them at stereo, they were playing katty perry remixes. Fun but cheesey dj's

last time c&c played a tribal set was probably in 2007

Their nights at Stereo in '05-'06 were absolutely incredible

One time I walked up to Ceballos on the dancefloor at Stereo and just straight up asked him "Do you miss playing tribal?".

His said "Well, I don't want to be known as a DJ who plays just one style".

A diplomatic response I guess, but it's not like I was going to get a better answer than that with that approach haha.

All the guys playing tribal still are tired, like Junior. The reason they arent getting booked is because they havent got with the times. Why play Playstation 1 when theres Playstation 3?

The reason Junior doesn't play much is because he's old and burned out.

The Playstation reference doesn't really apply here. If C&C in 2006 is the PS1, and their current sound is the PS3, the older model wins hands down. "Getting with the times" has meant a downturn in quality for several DJs we used to love. Most of the people I know who loved Lawler for his Lights Out sound now can't stand what he plays. The real issue is that when anything gets huge, there's a natural backlash and it goes away for a while. Same thing happened to prog. Hopefully there will be a resurgence of tribal in a different form that it had before. Rhythmic percussion and basslines are pretty hard to argue against when done well.

I like a lot of tech-house, and like any style that's huge, there's a bloat of generic crap that tries to cash in on it. That doesn't reflect on the style overall though.
