Actually you suggested a great approach last year or before. The pirated version has a crash or effect the legit version does not. Any degredation and someone will upload the legit version. This way, you can know who is playing the pirated version. And if you ever catch a big dj, its blackmail hour.
Yeah, my suggestion works for identifying the source for promos, but it wouldn't really be useful on a commercial basis.

I think you are right in that you would need an actual watermarking solution courts will recognize. Otherwise your evidence is easy to find holes. They could just say they added the effect.
It would be interesting to see what medium to big djs use the pirated version. I mean the days of promos are done and I can see big djs that are used to getting hand delivered versions not above gorrenting it if there is a flac version on day 1.
I see so many djs / producers who cut corners on their gear that I would not put it past them to use the same approach with music.

just a big lol at a dj being sued for playing a pirated track, im sure they all do
if one of the sites won't let me download a track in my region ill pirate it out of spite
if he was big enough it might get media attention and he might be shamed a bit for it but no one would really care
these guys are up there with their ipods and in pre-mixed cds these days (peter hook, guetta, shm, etc)
no one apparently cares about dj integrity

didnt anyone see the future music with dahlback and his pirated plugins?
or was it avicii?
did anyone care?

Avicii but its hard to know. So many studies use pirated versions of stuff they own. I often find the process of authorizing or loging in to the site for an update a hassle that I will just use the crack. The cracks often allow more functionality ie kontakt and reaktor.
But playing a pirated track, no excuse there. And I would not sue them. Blackmail. The value of people finding out is alot and you avoid court costs and negative branding as suing is never good. Mention me in your fm interview and we are even.

Also the fact that sylength has been abandoned much like korgs legacy stuff is reason to not pay. I think they consciously decided not to with their ms20 re issue.
That pisses me off enough to not give them a dime.

I'm in awe of you guys that make the most of the various promotional platforms. TBH, what with work and other commitments, it's all I can do to actually produce. I just don't have time for SC, FB and the others plus if I'm honest I find it incredbly tedious.
When I finally get round to sending some tracks to labels since going solo again, the fact I have about 1 follower may cost me dear!
That or the carp tracks of course.

Typically only matters for those with or the possibility of career so why woud you. Stop sending labels music. Pointless and so 1999.

anyway, awesome thread... some great thoughts in here.

Why not make interesting music? Such stuff kinda promotes itself, right?
