Mixing in a small bed room.

| So I have been making music with the krk 5's for about two years now, I have them situated literally right next to each other between my computer screen, and the right speaker is right next to a wall if that makes any difference. These speakers are not accurate by any standards, but I have never really had any complaints about a song as far as the clarity of any instruments. Which I guess where the saying comes into play "it doesn't matter what speakers you use, it's how well you know them." But alas I am finally ready to move on from my humble beginnings and ambark on a new journey that means I am coincidentally looking for a new pair of speakers, one that would be suitable for a bedroom that is not acoustically equipped to perform the task that I set out to do. I have had my eyes set on the yamahah hs80's but I am open to hearing options about other near field monitors, or ones suitable for a bed room. |

HS80s will be too big for a small room.
What about installing some treatment first? You can build some yourself for very little money.
Then I'd go for something 6.5" as there's only so much basic treatment can do. |

forget hs80 in a small room!
id look at genelec 8020/30 or focal cms40/50
i use the genelecs and i love alot about them, BUT they dont go loud or deep so maybe the 8030 is a better choise. they have alot of dip-switches to "adjust" to your room too.
heres how the 8020 looks at my place, tiny room, im standing next to our guest bed taking the pic. its about 2,5*3,5m2.

In the Yamaha range, the HS50Ms are designed for small rooms and much cheaper, too. That said, here is a quote by room treatment guru Ethan Winer (he was responding to someone who advised against choosing monitors based on woofer size):
| quote: | | I agree. I sometimes see the advice to use small speakers having poorer bass response in a small room. The reasoning is a small speaker won't excite the room's resonances at very low frequencies. But this is akin to sticking your head in the sand. The low end is difficult enough to mix in a good room with good speakers! How can intentionally throwing away the lowest octave possibly help make a better mix? The correct solution is using full range monitors, plus enough bass traps to make the room itself usably accurate. |

Not quite sure about that.
I sold my HS80s because of my room and replaced them with some cheaper 601A's until I move. I can mix more accurately on the smaller speakers especially in the low end.
I think when you're using larger cones in a smaller or untreated space you get so much, so low down that it can also mask frequencies higher up as well (let's take a wild stab in the dark and say up to 100hz or so). The smaller speakers don't throw out so much of that bottom end, so therefore the bass that you can hear is better controlled.
It's the only explanation I can think of :p |

| in my (limited!) experience: the larger the cone, the louder they have to be to sound "right". is that bull or can somebody back me up? |

So guys, room 13x12x9 feet (or in metric 396cm X 366cm X 274cm) is consider to be a small, average or big room and HS80s would be a good fit for it or not????

all right, i really want the hs80s but it looks like it might not be realistic for my space, those genelecs look about the right size, but even you're room looks bigger then mine  im also definitely open to using bass traps, where do you guys recommend I situate them? and any manufacturers anyone recommend?
ps it was either the bed, or a chair.

| Move your computer table to the middle of the wall, at the window. |
