the Palladium has been a concert venue for what, 50 years? there have been dj events there a few times a year there for a while, more nowadays due to Insomniac. But IMO its not a fair comparison as the Palladium is a famous concert venue and EDM makes up only a very small % of their bookings.
good point... not to mention that insomniac brings in A LOT of production for the "concert series" they host.

Define concert series when it comes to dj's at palladium? Eric prydz opens for arty at palladium its called a concert series?
Eric prydz pisses himself, slurrs his speech and trainwrecks at space and its called a disaster.

i have no clue why Insomniac calls it a "concert series" but thats what they have called it (they could have changed the name recently).
Prydz pissing himself... well... I've sharted a couple of times in my day (like yesterday). Figure, "hey... it's WARM!"

Yeah, given the layout of Circus, sectioning off into smaller clubs would be a terrible idea. But it is very much possible to get a small crowd in a huge space dancing the entire night. I know it because it is my specialty.

Circus is a huge club, and that needs to be used to its advantage. Rather than section it off and have separate small clubs where the sound bleeds all over the place, it would be better to host special events that would fill the place.

It's interesting to compare Palladium's strategy to Circus, at least for Saturday nights. Far as I know, Palladium isn't exclusive to Insomniac, as they have all kinds of different events such as rock bands, etc. What I have noticed is that the EDM events booked a Palladium are not going every week, they tend to be "special" events every once in awhile with triple headliners and usually either sell out or draw very good crowds.
LMD also did this every few months or so at Circus, take the "Trance Energy" night for example. With several headlining DJ's, good promotion, and strong ticket presales, they were able to get a buzz going about the party and draw in a pretty decent crowd.

With the current state of affairs, there's little possibility of any promoter other than Insomniac bringing in EDM DJ's there every week and drawing decent crowds. It worked different for Spundae & Giant, since they could book Armin, A&B, Ferry, pretty much anybody they wanted. Times are different now, and lesser known DJ's cannot bring the crowds in week after week. Without a good crowd, or expectation that there will be one, people are not going to show up. It's a terrible experience paying for parking and then walking into an empty club that never even begins to fill up, even if the DJ is from the other side of the world.
One strategy might be to book special event EDM nights at Circus. Bring in three good DJ's who are not married to Insomniac, promote it well, and chances are much better there will be a good crowd. Guess that's not the way most clubs work though, instead they have a promoter who tries in vain to fill a huge club against the odds every single week. It's also more of a gamble for the promoter, since if the club doesn't fill and three DJ's must be paid, then it's a financial washout.
Whatever the Palladium does seems to be working very well, though. I know it's a newly remodeled club, but I still hear all kinds of complaints about the sound, this and that...not everyone's going to agree on what a "great" club is. Then again, from what I hear, the Palladium is scheduled to be ripped down and turned into condos, so is it really doing that well? At least it has a good reputation.
Anyway, I think such EDM special event nights hosted by LMD might go over well at Circus, maybe once every few months. People get tired of going to the same clubs over & over, and everyone here seems to be saying they would like to see EDM back at Circus. And if it's not possible due to the way clubs, promoters, etc. work, then how does the Palladium pull it off? I'm sure there must be a way. :)
- Palladium EDM events are 18+, just like other concert events (Shrine etc.). Circus isn't 18+.
- We'll see how successful Motive+LMD will be with 420.

Also, those who say it's all about the promoter...you are WRONG.
DJs got tired of Circus, more so than any promoter. DJs just started saying they wanted to play in a more modern venue, especially in Los Angeles/Hollywood. The warehouse/dirty-feeling mega-club was a popular thing in the late 90s and early 2000s. By 2002 or 2003 that trend had changed. By 2005 or 2006 it was a complete thing of the past. Circus is still in the past.
Circus is an amazing venue and I am sure a good promoter would jump at the chance to throw parties there if it was made-over. You could throw some crazy 21+ events with big DJs with it's 3,000+ person capacity and make an assload of money if done right.
DJ's only got tired of Circus, cause there was no more "big player promotor" to bring them out and it got know as a hole with bad sound and nobody caring about the venue, DJ's only wanted to play these other venus cuz they were getting alot more money to play there. These days you couldn't pay the top djs enough money to play there, as the name has been tarnished in the dj community. If Spundae had never left circus and the sound was maintained, I have a feeling it would still be kicking ass right now

slightly disagree... it was difficult to book any acts there as the club was already losing it's reputation. Sometimes you have to jump off the sinking ship...
but who knows... maybe if spundae stayed there, things could have changed. I'll tell you one thing, it was definitely getting harder and harder getting people to show up week after week :(

I know this video is irrelevant to this thread, but if we can't bring Dubstep to Circus, maybe Mozart will do :haha:

Circus has undergone significant improvements- the decor and set-up is quite different, there is lots more lighting especially from the stage to evoke a massive "festival"-like feel with lots of those super bright spotlights that are all the rage (more than Avalon or Exchange has, I counted). Also, 360haus, the new Saturday event producers there, have totally revamped the Circus sound system with the EAW Avalon Series speakers that are in Avalon and the sound is much more enveloping and crisper than ever before. There are new VIP booths and the whole club feels much less expansive and overly big.
Full disclosure- I produce some of the gay special events held at the New Circus Disco so I am privy to the changes 360haus has done to the club.
correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Circus always have the EAW system in place? What separates the "Avalon EAW system" is the setup used at the location ie... bass bins on floor level while mids/high raised above. I know Circus used a "stacked" or "wall" setup.

not trying bash or troll, just curious

Yeah, Circus already had an EAW Avalon system.
And the LED curtain isn't new.
I just see a little decor and some spotlights, nothing overly special. (DJ booth could be surrounded by LEDs or monitors, you could use more of a variety of lightings. Plenty of things could be done that's more of a revamp)
Please note a number of people here used to practically live at Circus and knows every little detail of what it had before. :)
