Lews, there is no doubt about it, many tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of South Koreans would be wounded or killed. There really is nothing you can do to stop it. This would happen so quickly (over the course of 24-48 hours) that there would be nothing you could do short of nuking the entire DMZ to prevent these numbers.
Japan would be fine, their missile force that can reach Japan is minimal, mostly Scuds and domestic Scud variants. They take time to fuel and they are not accurate (and the domestic versions are probably even worse). Like I said, Aegis and Patriot can kill those, and we can go back to Scud hunting like we did in Desert Storm (though a bit harder in the rolling mountains of North Korea). |

Nothing springs to mind that would be comparable. That's the beauty of deterrence policies - most people don't want to be destroyed. The problem is when things get escalated out of control due to mistakes. If NK attacks, it won't be because they think they can destroy the US and take over the world. They're not that stupid. |
