Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a plugin that had a very strong sounding orchestra string section.
I have alot of warm sounding tones that mimic it but it just doesnt have the appeal of an orchestra sound.
Any suggestions? :)

What's your budget and how realistic/deep do you need? Orchestral strings libraries can range from <$100 to >$1K, depending on the number/type of articulations, number of microphone positions, etc. Many of the more popular orchestral samplers (e.g., LASS, VSL, EWQL) offer their string libraries at several price points, depending on how much detail and control you need. If you're not doing scoring work or orchestral mockups, you can probably get by with their basic versions.

For me, EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Gold and the basic VSL library that I got with Vienna Ensemble Pro are sufficient, but my orchestral needs are very basic. EWQL also just announced a new "Silver" version of the Hollywood Strings ($199), which may be worth a look. I'm sure tehlord and L4C will be along shortly to recommend libraries other than EWQL, and they both have a lot more knowledge/experience in this area than I do, but EWQL fulfills my basic needs most of the time. Another cheaper one to check out is Native Instruments Session Strings ($99, or included with Komplete 9).

BTW, if you like the idea of the Hollywood Strings Silver edition and you're not in a hurry to get it, I would suggest holding off for their next sale. EWQL runs 2-for-1 sales very frequently (every other month or so).

I heard a lot of good reviews of this one

Cinematic Strings 2 with NI's Kontakt, killer!!! :D

Thanks sooo much for the suggestions.
Looks like I have some good research to work with!
Cheers!

What exactly do you mean by strong sounding?

What kind of sound do you want to recreate?

Do you just want sections, or are you after individual solo instruments too?

Mainly I am looking for a String section.
As I am sure you know on Massive and even gladiator there are pads and some warm sounding "strings". These do sound cool but I wanted something a bit more crisp in tone, something that stands out like an actual string section

Cinematic Strings 2 for sure then.

Depends if you need solo strings or not, which articulations, legato et al.

If you really need a complete collection, I can only recommend Albion from Spitfire audio. It's a well-built collection. Not very cheap, but for me best bang for buck, at approximately 400 GBP.

Besides that there's Da capo from Sonokinetic which is less "expensive" at only 299 euros but also a bit less complete, although you're getting plenty of legato instruments, which I adore.

Stay away from the ProjectSAM products, overpriced, they got me once, and they will never have my money again. Gutted.

I adore LASS light + First chair bundle, not cheap for strings only, BUT put into perspective, it's not that bad, what I regret with those solo strings is the lack of control of vibrato. But you get what you give after all.

I don't know Garritan, it might be as good, but there are better specialists than I am for that kind of music.

Holy Crap the Da Capo sounds freakin AWESOME!
But damn these things are very expensive. Might have to do a little saving for that one!!
Thanks!!! :D

Truth be told, after looking at most of these I feel that this is exactly what I need,however...I am tapped out as I just purchased Ableton 9 and Massive and that set me back quite a ways.
So, curious. (I hope I am not trolling my own thread..lol)
I am doing a song that just needs some brilliance in it. It is a very warm song with not alot of climatic points. In essence, it is very minimal. I decided to add some pads to mimic a string section but it is still very warm. It blends nicely but just does not have that crispness I feel it deserves. It is only about 12 bars total but again..it needs some strings.
Would anyone out there be able to help with some strings?
I could send you the track and the mock "strings" I added and you could replace the pads with something a little more realistic? Of course, full credit would be given!! Or..is this asking to much here.
Whichever...this is for sure the level of strings I am looking for. Thanks again!

I could do it with EWQL or VSL strings, but I don't want any credit for it (not enough effort or reason to justify crediting me IMO).
