Logic users - how are you working with drums/percussion?

OK, so once again I'm considering buying Logic for my MBA. I've been collaborating with a local guy who uses it and he's given me a brief tour. Before I pull the trigger, I'd just like to know what you guys think of its drum/percussion sequencing? Are most of you just using the piano roll?

While we're on the topic, feel free to make this thread a discussion of drum editing in any DAW - it's an area that I think ALL developers could use some improvement.

Do it cryo, you can't go wrong with logic. I do all my drums and percussion in the arrange window. I just lay the samples flat on there. I know midi would be better for percussion so you can always change samples and see what fits best but i do it my way.

I use a combination of raw samples and MIDI. I try to minimize the number of samples that I keep on my MBA so I don't eat up my HD, so I've been mostly using a combination of Tremor, EZDrummer (for real sounds), Nerve, and a variety of select Wave Alchemy samples. Ideally, I could find a way to reduce it even further.

The Piano Roll in Logic is not perfect, but it still does the job. What I like is the several options to randomize your midi. Perfect when you hit the creative block.

Like many others in the early days I used to program stuff straight into the arrange window because of timing issues. Nowadays I use midi programming instead, at least as much as I can and end up rendering to stereo audio files for further manipulation and mixing.

Thanks Lolo!

Any of you guys use the Hyper editor for drums? Just watched a tutorial on it and it looks pretty cool.

I used to, it is quite cool in first instance but the interface may be very very VERY nasty with the user sometimes. For example when drawing stuff. I've never been a fan and do everything from within the piano roll as often as I can. THe hyper editor comes really handy when doing region-based automation of your instruments and effects. Then it's really good.

I am not sure how often you will use hyper practically. Some others swear by the hyper editor.

That's what I sorta suspected. Knowing me, I'll probably also find the piano roll the easiest/most intuitive and use the Hyper editor for specific tasks.

I think I'm almost convinced to give Logic a go. I've been watching the Groove3 videos and it looks like it functions in ways that I'm already used to, being fluent in Sonar, Pro Tools, and Studio One. Actually, it will replace Studio One, which I hardly use anymore.

the easiest thign i remember about logic was its built in drum machine

was using the built in drum sequencer and then dragging the patterns you made in the mini sequencer to the timeline

that little thing was amazing and i quite enjoyed using it

I usually do my drum programming in MIDI but sometimes I use audio when I want to play with things like Effectrix.

I used to lay out the samples in the Arrange Window, but things got messy really fast for me when editing/copying etc.
Now I load the samples up into an EXS24 and do the programming in MIDI.
Considering either Maschine or Battery to replace or complement the EXS24.
