psytrance's characteristics

i want to like psytrance - it has many great elements: dark, driving, spacy etc - and seems to be then only authentic genre of trance left, but...

that kick... i hate it!! sort of resonance, filtered clean and punchy, it's in EVERY track... or so it seems.

other than the distinctive basslines, is the genre defined by this type of kick?!

is there any psytrance that has a different style of kick, and by who? are there any dj's who specialise in it in their sets?

i know it's not psytrance, but i REALLY enjoyed j00f's whitelabel euphoria...

are there any subgenre's of psytrance? or is it all one gear? :happy2:

I prefer Goa to Psychedelic although producers today blur them together.Psychedelic over and over get boring fast with the same basslines. I haven't paid much attention to it for years now.

Those White Label Euphoria CDs are great by the way.

The reason behind that kick is that normally because of how fast and driving it is bass is not sidechained to the kick so that kind of kick has a lot of punch but no low end so it doesn't muddy the bassline. Eventually that kind of kick just became popular they could use others with similar results i suppose.

As for genres (and surely forgetting a lot)

psy GOA: This is probably a genre on its own, different kick, basslines... just the atmospheric and psychedelic type sounds in common.

full on psy trance: 145+ bpm psytrance, most famous, Infected Mushroom,Astrix,Skazi,Juno Reactor,Yahel... all the big ones and other less famous like Electro Sun,Gaudium formerly Protoculture....

Progressive Psy Trance: Beatport dominant, 134-136 bpm, this has a sidechained bassline so it's more groovy and probably works better on a dancefloor. Ace Ventura, Interactive Noise, Fabio Moon,Coming Soon (this one is new in the scene i don't know if he is a new alias of someone famous but looks talented)Kick is different sometimes here! THis looks more like pitched up minimal, normally there are no melodies whereas full on psy has a melody a number of times.

Psy Breaks, Psybient: Well you get the idea.

Nah, in the psy-trance scene they have no time whatsoever for separating it down into hilariously pedantic sub-genres...
Adam420
Agreed, those kicks are really annoying and are a major turn off

If you don't know the difference between morning-elve-progressive-dawn-graveyard-hard-psy-tekkno and full-on twilight-orc-ambient-goa-forest-trance, you don't know about music.

That's just stupid. Even a n00b knows it's twilight-GOBLIN-ambient-goa-forest-trance.

You complain about this kind of kick right?

I love it may be personal but as i've said you can't expect a very deep kick because there's no space in the mix for it.

Psytrance is the worst kinds of electronic genres i've ever come around.

There is some good psytrance from the 90's then maybe Vibrasphere and the like but otherwise it's crap all around!

Psytrance heads feel free to hate me! I don't care!

till last year I was really not into psy at all.But this year there are great productions, and they changed very much in last couple of years. It is becoming more and more trancy.(It already is but there are so many new elements in it now)It's like a shift, trance became housy and psy became trancy.
Really, really into it right now.and you'll get used to it just give it some try

Try producers from middle east, believe me that is the .Especially Israel, those guys are born into psy
