Mainstream tracks are usually tracks which have been produced in order to make money (made for the charts), but it also true that some 'underground' tracks can become mainstream because they are popular, like 4 Strings - Into the Night and PPK - Resurrection.
Defining 'cheese' is difficult and I'd imagine different people have different opinions of what is and what isn't cheese. Usually a cheesy track will be very simple in structure, have catchy female vocals or be happy to an unhealthy extent.

| well... a track that sees an excessive amount of public airtime. even if it wasn't cheese to begin with...it'll slow creep into that category. also a track with like 2 layers of sound. a beat and a synth. nothing else. ehehe. blech. |

| I call one-finger-melodies trance tracks cheesy as well. You know those melodies that are made up by playing each note seperatly asif one is tapping the keys of the piano one by one with the same finger. |

that's the big problem. most people say the track is CHEESE simply because they don't like it and they wanna piss off others about it.
IMHO, cheese is a combination of many things: stupid-sounding vocals, cheap bassline, cheap pop-like synths, non-trancy BPM, too much octave variation, stuff like that. it doesn't really have anything to do with being mainstream. |

| well overall it's hard to define what cheeze really is. trance as a whole ain't cheesy but you get tracks that's like europop, eurodance, dance with a splash of trance in it and ppl immediately classify it as trance as well. i dunno...anything that sounds too much like dance for me is pure cheese. |
