The market for Mobile Djing out there, Is my setup enough? And other things to add

Okay Im about to be getting into the Mobile Djing business pretty soon. I don't have anything just yet and im starting off really really small.
I have seen the post of some people's equipments and I must say that it is very very pro like and overwhelming on how much they probably spent on it. The stuff on my setup can't even hold a candle next to it. This is my setup so far due to my budget and inexperience.
2 CDJ100s
DJM300 Mixer
500 Effector
Shure SM-58 Mic
Sony V600 headphones
Dual Brace Stand for my gears
and 450 Mackie active speakers with stands
And my strongest point is probably the music collection I have since it is pretty much eclectic and up to date.
now that is not much to market myself. I don't know how much in demand is the mobile djing business. how much business does the average mobile dj get a week. The price they charge and the clients they get.
I also have to speak about lightings, smoke machines and other things to enhance the parties even more. What the heck am I suppose to get?????? What stuff do i need? What sites can I get good deals on. What sites carry it so I can view its specs and such.
For now im starting off small and with more money on the way, i can just get more and more equipments to make myself look experienced and pro like |

| Well I dunno about where you live.. but near me, Mobile DJing is a big buisness and requires hardly any skill :( Every party I go to for Sweet 16 or Graduation or whatever has just been some body who has dropped the cash for his cd decks, mixer and all the other crap and all he does is crossfade into the next track... Sounds terrible everytime, Makes my ears cringe.... And these people are getting paid about $500 for 3-4 hours... As long as you don't mind playing requests and hiphop and oldies and stuff it's a fairly easy gig... Probly will be even better if u can manage to make the transitions sound decent... Which I would imagine is hard going between genres... |

i myself am a mobile dj
i work for a company called sounds unlimited
we average about 7-14 shows per weekend
there is a market for it here in calgary, but i don't know where you live so it would be hard to figure that out
as for music, you need to have a nice, large selection...
your best bet, if you want to be good and competitive in the mobile music biz, is to get yourself into a music promo dealy (for lack of a proper term)

| All I can suggest is maybe some lighting. Nothing like a 2w laser, but just some simple flashy lights to go with the cheesy music that you will be forced to play. Just those round flashy things that come in groups of five if you know what i mean |

not to disagree just for fun... but..
i'd ditch the CDJ100's in favor of the CDJ700. Better deck all around... not that much more money from what I remember.
the DJM300 is a good mixer, but you may end up needing more inputs.. and I think the cost of a DJM300 + EFX500 is almost as much as a DJM3000 (the new mixer from pioneer) - so the DJM3000 would be a smart investment. regardless, if you are going to get an external efx unit, wait a while.. i've heard rumors from a few sources pioneer may be putting out another effects module soon to match thier new product line.
that brings another thing to mind.. why not just forget the tabletop CD decks in favor of a Denon 2100, 2600, or pioneer CMX3000? Any of the rack mount CD decks would work out so perfect...
In that sort of setup, you have one big case. The mixer and CD controller sits on top on the rack rails, and the CD drives mount in the front, so you can get at them and they are out of the way. many cases are made for this purpose and it's becoming a mobile DJ standard in a way.
I'd advise getting MDR-V7506's or MDR-V6's instead of MDR-V600s.. V6's are not V600's... and V6's / 7506's are basically the same speaker in a different package. the V6 or 7506 are studio monitors, the sound they produce is more defined than the V600 or V700s, which are DJ monitors, and tend to have "colored" bass..
since your on a budget, maybe look at getting some of the stuff second hand.. it's amazing some of the deals you can find. a decent amount of my gear is second hand, some of it coming to me at bargain basement prices... keep your eyes open! |

yes.. lighting really adds to the environment.
we threw a party this weekend and used a few of the american DJ "pocket spots" which worked out really well.. they are basically el-cheapo technobeams with less functionality/smaller size, but still excite the crowd. |

I think that the CDJ-100's definately be the better choice for a mobile DJ because of the effects. You would use them a whole lot more than the Seamless loop of the 700's. They are the only main difference as well as the effecient slide-in CD of the CDJ-100's. You also save about >$200 as well.

Right on. You can't hook up the EFX-500 to the DJM-300 because it doesn't have the effects loop which the 500, 600, and 3000 have. In the USA they have a special deal on the CMX3000 + DJM-3000 including a free carry case. The CMX-3000 also has scratching which also comes handy. Effects on the 3000 would also finish off a good mobile DJ setup. Both 19" would also look nice.
The Mackie SRM-450's also are good enough for house parties or school gigs.. these things pumps with quality sound!!
And parties without lighting are useless. Lighting and no lighting has a HUGE difference!! |

hmm... i seem to recall the 700's have finer pitch control...
i'm not a big fan on the CDJ100 effects - i'd rather just use the EFX500 or the DJM5/6 effects. but the CDJ effects aren't too bad.
and yes.. lighting makes a BIG difference... heheheh

I do alot of basement parties here at my school, and I was recently contacted by a DJ service who wants to pick me up. What are the advantages of being on with a company? Anybody work for one? Do you think I could get better deals on equipment and such? |

what's the advantages of being unionized? same thing if you're with a company... u may have to pay a small due and/or take smaller cuts, but you won't have to handle every aspect of the business yourself. it all depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice... :D |

Lighting and your music collections makes or breaks your job as a mobile DJ. If you don't have lighting then the crowd won't be feeling you and it just won't work out well so get some lighting a good list of lighting is
4 x Strobes
1 x Lighting Controller with Strobe Control
2 x Multi Colored Mushrooms
2 x Comet
and maybe a laser if you wanna splurge on one of the cheaper ones.
A fog or bubbler is cool but isn't so necessary though it is cool if you can get one because it makes the lighting look good.
If you have a request list that you deal with you'll also be a lot happier by just having people put down songs they want on the list.
Mobile DJing is easy and a good way to pay for some of your equipment etc. in order to further any aspirations you have playing the music you enjoy. |
