Mix Junky!!
Hey guys, looking to get either get a set of studio monitors or studio headphones. Havent soundproofed my room or anything like that, havent even looked into it. its important to fet done i know that. See a lot of people saying the headphones have damaged their hearing in previous years and to avoid them. But night time producing is off the cards without for me then in that case. Pros and cons with both I suppose. Any reccomendations for either? Advice welcome too guys. Helped me quite a lot so far :)

headphones don't damage your hearing, loud music does. mix at a reasonable level and your hearing will be fine, fatigue won't set in as fast, and your mixes will be better.

Since when? :whip:

Event opals have been around forever and I thought the Twins eclipsed them long ago :conf:

Oh Palm, what is it with you and PMC's? You'd need a control room the size of a house to properly use those badboys.

Well I was looking at both not so long ago and anecdotally the Events came out on top by about 5-1.

Interestingly, PSI's come out even better, but are a fair chunk more expensive.

I wish Event would do a 6.5" version of the Opals though. I'm becoming more and more convinced that 8" monitors are just too big for the vast majority of (inevitably) compromised home studios.

If your just going the headphone route i suggest the Sony MDR 7520. It feels like you have monitors in your cans and they are just wicked.

I think the general consensus is that closed headphones are not good for mixing. That was certainly my experience. IMO, better choices would be...

AKG 240 Studio/MK2
AKG 701/702
BeyerDynamic DT-880
Sennheiser HD600

I avoid rear ported or radiator monitors like the plague, because I can't put up acoustic treatment. If you are able and planning to put up acoustic treatment, I'd second DJ RANNs recommendations. If not, on the budget end of things I'd go...

KRK RP6 G2
Adam A5X
Adam A7X

KRK RP6 G1 was terrible and I think G2 suffers from that stigmata undeservedly. KRK RP8s are and always have been terrible, which again impacts on perceptions of the whole line. The new budget Adams might be worth listening to, but I haven't seen any good reviews. A5Xs are good monitors. They are 5.5", so they are much better than your average 5" and come close to a typical 6". A7Xs are still as popular as ever, so that speaks for itself.
