Coping with the Realization that You're Smarter than Your Parents (pg. 3)

My Uncle had a grade 5 education. He can't read or write. However he came to this country and started one of the biggest plastic mega monster companies in the world in the 80s and sold it for multi millions. For a guy who isn't "smart by your standards hes pretty much a in genius in anyone elses who realizes what he achieved by applying his limited amount of information. Being Smart isn't about how many facts you have memorized its about how you apply those facts.

Your grandma may not be able to have a conversation with you about hardon's (I don't know why you would want to have that convo with her anyways) but she can school you most likely on how to make sure your family survives a war or how to feed a starving family with a small ration of food. your wikipedia.

^This, exactly.

Look at Steve Jobs. He dropped out of college, wasnt brilliant by any means in terms of actual programming or creating the OSX. Had no background in engineering. But he basically created one of the most profitable company's in the history of the world. Would you say you're smarter than him if you couldn't hold a conversation with him about CERN? Maybe your grandma just doesn't want to talk to you.

Besides, I'm sure what you were trying to explain is something that anyone with an 8th grade education could understand.

*Most* people become more conservative as they age. That's just how it is. I'm not talking the narrow scope of political alignment (especially the American brand), but the entire foundation of conservative thought in the first place is dearly ingrained in things like nostalgia, pride, nationalism, and a refusal to reform. People want to conserve who they are and where they live. And who can blame them? The weight of experience might make it almost literally impossible for people to adapt to new ideas and concepts as a defense mechanism of sorts, because it threatens the many years being put (however inadvertently) into who they are, what sort of character they have, what they've earned, etc.

The funny thing is that *most* young people think they know everything, too. Your parents probably thought their parents were total squares at some point, and that they knew far more than they ever will. Maybe they were right? Maybe you're right? It's probably a very good thing, if it's true; it means we're getting somewhere as people.

People who feel the need to prove their intelligence or remind people that they are intelligent are actually quite the opposite.

Don't. You loosely defined you being smart in your post saying that "As [you] continue to incorporate new ideas and concepts into [your] mind, they become more resistant to incorporating anything new, which limits them by default", and I showed you that babies are way better at it than any of us here. What could possibly be an argument against it?

I think blake proved to us he is too stupid to realize he is stupid

Intellekshual
My family (my husband and in-laws included) are the most intelligent people I know. I owe everything to them. It's wonderful being surrounded by such amazing people. It's truly a blessing. I wish the same for everyone.
Sure, we differ in some ways but it would be a mistake to think you more intelligent, knowledgeable (whatever) than they are. Everyone has something to teach you, even if you don't realize it's useful at the time, it will be. Embrace it. :)

Actually, most people who try really hard to prove anything are unlikely to be just that. Of course, I can't help but use the same rationale on myself and get a bit worried: If I try so hard to tell everyone to be nice and tolerant, could it mean I'm the next Nazi tyrant? A Communist leader in the maker? Or, scarier still, the most recent COR mod?

:nervous: :p
