John Askew Attacks Avicii, Thanks Him For Making Him Puke (pg. 3)

I like this article. I think people should stop being such pussies and say what's on their mind instead of feebly trying to avoid conflict because of dance music politics.

This unfortunately could not be more true. My big break was ruined by, believe it or not, a tranceaddict post. Kenneth Thomas tried to slam me into the ground when he got wind that I was going to meet oakenfold regarding an Internet radio proposal (this was a long time ago when oakenfold was still a top 5 dj) the basic idea revolved around selling "virtual" tickets to listeners all over the world. At the time, this had not been done and was not done until many years. After a good conference with Paul, the egil, and one of music industry gurus (we were unsure of the royalty implications) I was set to fly to LA.

Kenneth got wind of it and forwarded a tranceaddict post I made a long time ago dismissing Paul as a washed up has been coke head. I haven't spoken to him since and it's been nearly a decade.

Point being, there is nothing good that can come from this. Askew may one day be in a position where he needs avicii's blessing/approval/companionship and he likely will not get it. Ironically askew has become oakenfold a right hand man, doing his Facebook and twitter and even some writing for him, but oakenfold is close to retirement. Askew is going to have to find a new gig in a few years and stuff like this can come back to haunt you for the rest of your life. I will always wonder what could have been.... Sucks

Ouch man. That wound will never heal.

i disagree. It works in the short run. It is just ugly , it robs you of any integrity and say what you want about a concept alluring to certain people but this is just pathetic and makes him look pathetic.

The people that go see avicci are the same people going to see newtown or was it o town. They don't care. This only makes him look bad.

At least Dadmau5 did it without naming actual people. That created buzz without looking pathetic.

There was way too much effort put into that rant. Another reason why big djs should have every single tweet or post sent to their publicist before print. This is obviously a case of him being drunk and high doing something with his buddies they all thought would be funny.

Never talk about anyone. This is rule number 1. You just don't do it. It will never work for you in the long run. It can only backfire.

+1 - right on the money man, agree !!

It would be nice if it were that way but it's never a good idea to burn any bridges in this industry (and almost all others) - It rarely will serve to help your cause and can only come back to haunt you in the future. The upper echelon movers and shakers of dance music are a smaller group of people than most realize. Askew will probably be fine because nobody will even remember avicii a year from now, but you never know.

I just wouldn't do it. I had to learn the hard way and will be haunted for the rest of my life because of it. Who would have ever thought Oakenfold would read and care what I said? I obviously didn't (or I wouldn't have written it) - The really sad part is I used to drink every night and was drunk off my ass when I wrote it and didn't even remember writing it. I initially denied the accusations until I was able to find the post myself.

Don't mean to make this thread about me but I believe what happened to me is a perfect example of why this is a bad idea wether its an email or a harmless tranceaddict forum post.

I don't mind having a laugh every now and then but this letter by mister Askew is just sad.

Whats the big deal? Decent read and good for a laugh. HOT TOPIC, lets discuss the out of it right now.

This same tension between mainstream and non mainstream can be found right now in other fields such as film and books.

If only those pesky mainstream audiences would start recognising 'real art' eh...........

Luckily, L4C has never talked about ANYONE

L4C s not selling anything. There are about 3 layers of abstraction and even if you knew my birth name, it different than my legal name, and I have 2 noms de plume so my shut talking will never get back. And that s how you should talk. He could of said all that, made a share from a fake account, get the publicity and none of the backlash not taking any sides.

any media expert would tell you that you should have at the very least 2 fake accounts that have real people as friends. 1 hour a week and those accounts are beyond scrutiny within 1-2 years.

While i agree with what you've said here and it's not only a lame attempt at humor but also comes across chidish, you're missing his angle;

He doesn't give a about the Avicii fans as such or luring them away etc - they are not his target demographic in this rant - it's about energising his own base and/or general trance fans. If you look at the comments on that page, it's somewhat worked. The fans that like him or his type of trance aren't in to Avicii or commercial dance pop so having a dig at Avicii appeals to their sensibilities.

Avicii's "fans" (and lets be honest, this isn't a discerning crowd who follow dance music avidly, it's people who go to vegas pool parties because they heard that hip-hop is no longer played in the klurb), won' take offense as they don't know and will never know who John Askew even is.

It did in a way, I've always like Joel's cheeky, speak before you think tone, but he really didn't say anything that controversial. He just said most EDM fans were muppets (including his own) for listening to DJ's pressing play. He caught flack for that too and it was a bit of headache for him and his publicist to sort out in the end as he was essentially biting the hand that feeds not to mention insulting all the guys he was playing alongside each week, but it didn't hurt him in the long run.

Way too much effort, but I hate the over pasteurized press releases from DJ's, rather than just speaking their mind.
