I hate to blow up my own spot, but I still don't really know what that term means. What is "street credibility"?

I remember the first time I went to school in a black / hispanic neighborhood was high school. On my first day, as I approached the campus, I saw thugs chilling on the corner, blasting gangsta rap from their portable stereos, or whatever. Upon seeing this, I called my mom immediately and told her that I must not be at the right place. :stongue:

Uncle Tom imo.

Goddamnit! I hate that you can tell, even online. The first time I heard the term "Uncle Tom" I was being called it by my white best friend, when we were around 14 or 15. I also hate that all my non-black friends are way more up on new slang terminology, and black music from the 70's, 80's, and 90's than I am.

I'm really not that bad though. Growing up, I bounced between two parents at opposite ends of the income spectrum, so I did get to experience the ghetto, living in the projects, etc. My brothers who grew up solely with my dad are a lot more sheltered. Going through a drive through one time, years ago, a guy was standing outside begging for money. My dad rolled down his window, gave the guy money, and proceeded through the drive through. As soon as we pulled away, my brother asked, "Dad, why is that guy outside begging for money? Why doesn't he just go to the bank? They've got plenty of money there." :wtf:

... Ooooooh. Please tell me there's a video or story to go along with this image, lol.

All right, so as far as "The N Word" goes, I'm in a bit of a predicament. My parents raised me never to use the term (or any of its variants), so I generally don't unless I'm quoting someone else.

Problem is, as he's been getting older, my dad's been loosening up, I suppose, and has appropriated the term. Just the other day I was asking my dad for advice on a cover letter I'd sent to a job I applied for, in which I'd realized I left out some info that may have been useful to the employer.

My dad's response, via text; "Send an addendum, n@$%r!"

I'm wondering how to tell my dad not to ever talk to me like that, without coming off as a yuppie :conf:

Ask EARNYOURKEEP. He uses the N word when he's not even black.
