The rumor really didn't make much sense to me for a couple of reasons.
1. The people that throw BPM are from Canada (not Brazil) and they have build up Playa as a destination. Moving it at this point would be like starting over again.
2. The owners of BPM also own The Blue Parrot, further solidifying them to the area, and giving them a resource to capture the bar at the busiest club.
What's odd is we heard this rumor from locals who live in Playa. My massage therapist, 2 local playa people who we shared a cab with to the Mayan ruin party, day zero festival.
Let's just hope it stays in playa, because Brazil will be too far away for most people to attend I think. |

also flights to Brazil from North America are much longer and MUCH more expensive usually. So that means less people going from their current customer base. |

| isn't the most logical thought that they're simply expanding? |

| I'll ask Craig next time I see him if he confirm/deny any of this. |

I went and I had another amazing time down there
First few days were admittedly depressing: rain and more rain. As a result the day parties were pretty much skipped during those days and the night parties were flooded in many areas since the drainage in the clubs are extremely substandard. The one silver lining in all that is that it afforded us time to rest up after travel (and New Years eve just before the travel), since you have to pace yourself for these marathon festivals. It also made the sunnier parts of the festival that much more livlier.
Wow, were the djs ever on point! My favourites were Marco Carola, Steve Lawler, Loco Dice, Adam Beyer, Nicole Moudaber, Mark Knight, Stacey Pullen, HOSH and Carlo Lio. It seems as though the djs are adding more soul to their tracks, less bland, less generic tech house and more chuggy, housey tracks, old school vocals, etc. Lots of latin big room sounds so the Mexico setting may have had a lot to do with that aspect.
BPM also becomes a festival of "who didn't you see" and I have tons of names for that unfortunate list as well. This happens when you go with a big group of ppl as well, all with differing agendas and schedules, etc. I was hoping to discover some new names but ultimately got caught up going to most of the bigger parties instead with our group of over a dozen people. Walking into the last few tracks of a Hot Since 82 or a Carl Craig set was not uncommon when your schedule was as haphazard as mine. I was sleeping from 9AM to 4PM everyday, even :p
Fortunately there weren't as many under-the-weather partiers compared to last year's festival. I also noticed there were more clubbers and hot girls/rentals lol. Overall, it seemed like an 80/20 split, with the 80 percent the chill Piknic/Stereo-type crowd and 20 percent the Beach Club/NCG/Miami/Jersey/Vegas bottle service crowd lol. Curiously, I didn't see that many ppl from Montreal, outside of some staff from Stereo and Circus; the attendees were predominately from Latin America, Toronto, several American states and some from as far away as Europe and Australia.
Lots of friendly ppl everywhere but also a lot more 'sellers' than the last time I went in 2012. They were all over the place.
Go check out Be-at-tv or soundcloud, lots of fresh sets for downloading. I heard some new tracks that will tear up the dancefloor in 2014 so listen for those as well, esp if you're a budding dj, producer or simply a fan of the music.
So many are comparing BPM to a mini Ibiza, from its beaufiful setting to the excellent non commercial programming to the mature crowd that is there for the music. Sock away about $150 a month for the next year and try it, it's definitely worth it. |

| I could see BPM expanding to South America but not moving, just like the other festivals have done |

| There are other clubs/venues in the area of Playa. Would make more sense to have more day/night options than the typical 3 so the influx of people can be absorbed, much like a Miami Music week where there are so many options. |

I think they've tried to spread the programming out as wide as possible, that's why you see some prominent names pitted against one another during the day as well as in the night parties. They've also tinkered with the VIP wristband so that ppl can't just load up on the opening parties and consequently jam the venues without paying more than those who attend the festival later on (ie 7 day wristband pricing). I think they've reached the apex of how much Kool Beach, Coco Maya, Blue Parrot and Mamitas can hold and are looking at ways of expanding, cuz some of those events were shoulder to shoulder. That not only takes away from the patron's dancing experience, it's also a safety hazard.
Additionally, If you threaten to leave the city then that takes away all the revenue that Playa would get from the festival, so perhaps this could be a barganing ploy by the organisers to design the festival the way they want to, without too much outside interference.
One more big club is needed for both nighttime and daytime events, imo. I think it will stay in Playa, or at least Cancun if Playa is not longer feasible. |

Kool Beach actually never gets close to full overal but because of its layout there its either slammed near the stage or relatively empty.
I think they should look at a new layout/floorplan there. |

yup, it's about 2k minimum unless you're able to sleep on the beach and/or find someone's couch to save some bucks, along with buying individual tickets instead of the VIP wristband.
If you're that resourceful and thrifty you could do a few BPM events for close to a grand total. Or if you have a tan, huge rack and firm toilet you could do it for pretty much free... |

I was at the innervisions party at blue venado in the jungle... it was definitely the best party ive ever been to. The people, the vibe, and the music... top shelf all night and all morning! ame, dixon, mano b2b2b at the end... david august... wow...
trying to find a recording from the night... hope it surfaces so I can relive it! the short video clips do not do it justice. |
