| If there's one movie this year that you should see in a cinema, it's this one. Go watch it on the biggest screen possible with the best soundsystem possible and in 3D. |

| It looks interesting to me, but I can't help but feel it's just a technologically driven movie. |

What, like another Avatar? |

in some ways it is a tech driven movie (but so was starwars & the matrix & terminator 2)...
but it has more than avatar imo. Cuaron is starting to move up the list of the all time great directors and this movie furthers that. (case in point - children of men)
the story is simple and straight down the line. no bloat like a lot of recent hollywood movies. the acting is solid and the script is okay. (there are 2 scenes in this movie that i found to be pretty cheesy that bring this film down from perfect). there is however, plenty of symbolism and visual storytelling going on all the way through that gives the movie a few more layers than the simple script woud have you believe.
the scenery is absolutely amazing and in imax 3d probably as close as you will get to an actual spacewalk - and when the action and disaster comes it is some of the most mindblowing you will witness. i could feel synapses in the back of my brain firing like crazy, trying to take in what the i was watching and hearing (no explosions in space, but you do hear the vibrations bullock feels and the score is mesmirising).
it all feels so organic - and the long cuts in almost realtime create immense tension - the movies real strength & drive.
all in all it is no 2001: A space odyssey (my favourite movie of all time) however its really not trying to be that. its its own beast - and what a damn fine beast it is

Some people keep saying it has no story, but that's wrong. I was surprised by how much everything there has its symbolic or storytelling purpose. Even those incredibly long takes are always strictly subordinated to the narrative, even though their length could suggest something like a Béla Tarr film. Gravity is first and foremost a deeply humanist film about coping with loss, and more universally and symbolically about rebirth. |

| Unfortunately I won't be seeing it. Cairns has overpriced, understaffed and undercleaned cinemas all owned by the same people. I pretty much refuse to go there unless it's a hugely anticipated must-see. |

A recommendation from you would probably lean me towards not seeing it. You said Transformers was more than just an action movie. |

My girlfriend and I are thinking about seeing it. I haven't seen a movie in 3D yet, so figured this would be a good time as any to check it out.
I just can't stand Sandra Bollocks... |
