Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Well it's a stone cold classic as is SAW II. I actually made a thread about SAW II some time ago. This one is much more upbeat and childlike. I've always wondered if some of these tracks really were made in '85 because that would be beyond absurd, even for a genius like Aphex. These tracks sound like they couldn't or shouldn't exist in a time before rave but in '85 house was just getting defined in Chicago, let alone across the pond.
This one might be favorite. It sounds like something that could be released on LIES or one of these more out there labels today and no one would bat an eye. Actually, everything on this sounds eerily modern, like it was made by time travelling aliens or something.

Just amazing stuff for sure. Tha has to be my favorite followed by Actium and Delphium. What is this guy up to these days?
Tempted to get the reissues on wax. |

He apparently has a few finished albums but he doesn't want to release them. Warp Records was owned by Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett, and apparently RDJ was always closer to Mitchell. Sadly, Mitchell died of cancer back in 2001, which is around the time the last Aphex Twin album came out.
RDJ has said in numerous interviews that although he loves making music he has no interest in letting other people hear it, and he releases entirely to let him afford to continue to do his own thing and make music without having to get a job. Given he charges £50,000 for a one hour DJ set these days he probably has no incentive whatsoever to release his stuff, especially if he doesn't get along with the guy who owns the label he has a contract with. |

| I thought that was a rumor about all these Aphex Twin unreleased albums. Did he ever go into detail as to why he prefers not to release the material? He epitomizes what a prodigy is. I liked reading about him making his own synthesizers in his teens. |

Seconds: How would you feel about it then?
RDJ: Same as I do now.
Seconds: So the success that you've enjoyed from this means nothing to you?
RDJ: It does, because I don't have to get a job and I have more time to make music in the long term. But not in the short term because it means making records and doing press which takes up time. I'm doing it because obviously making records, doing press, and having my photo taken allows me to earn a living.

| My favorites off that album are Tha and The music makers, although I really don't hear anyone ever mention these two when the favorites are discussed.. To me those two work like magic whenever I take a walk or run, or catch a train, the perfect loops. |

I read somewhere that he is contractually obligated to do three more albums for Warp. So theoretically they could force him to put out something but they're obviously not going to. They've always had a very hands-off approach with him, one of the guys at Warp said that they never heard any of his album material until the day he brought it in for the mastering.
I don't know if I buy the 'only releases for money' thing. In the mid 2000's he was already more than loaded enough and then he pumped out a staggering eleven Analord records within a year. And then there's the low key pseudonym stuff like The Tuss and probably some other projects. Rephlex is still active as well. He seems to enjoy ing with his fans more than anything else. |

| Of course you should take everything said in an Aphex interview with a hefty grain of salt (I almost added that in an edit) but not releasing anything for over a decade under his main alias suggests there's an element of truth to it. I think the potential issues with Warp I mentioned are probably a bigger factor overall, though. |
