incredible party, Carl Cox DESTROYED the place
Seen him twice before but now I know why.. old school, new school, next level, big room and high energy. You can listen to his recent Timewarp set and have basic idea but the live, big room is much different experience.
Great festival, I think the longest wait took 45 min and some were getting in within minutes with a regular ticket, at around 1130pm. The producton is getting better every year, the Alice in Wonderland theme was cool.
Nicole and Deep Dish started off very low tempo and dark, DD almost brooding music. I missed most of their set but I heard tons of positive reviews, not surprised as Sharam is capable of delivering too and can compliment Dubfire and vice versa. They will only get even more dynamic together with more gigs.
Nicole took way too long to bring the techno energy up, esp after that clinic that Carl laid. Last hour of her set was decent though. Caught a bit of the other two rooms, great energy and the three room concept certainly alleviated overcrowding
Massive kudos to Paskal Daze as well, this local is very talented and has a great ear for the music, seen him on the dancefloor dancing to other djs at other events so it's not surprising that he knows what to play to get people moving. |

Markus also killed it, deep tech, techno, tech trance, uplifting trance, excellent mixing, dirty heavy basslines. Pretty wide scope of music for this 'trance' dj.
Wasn't too rammed, room to move and very energetic but chill crowd. |

Nice review. I sent your comment to Paskal he will be happy to hear this. As a good friend of his I can confirm that he spends equally as much time on the dance floor dancing as he spends behind the decks playing.
I'm very curious to know if the techno room was empty for Moudaber while DD was playing? I'm sure the majority was curious to hear DD no?

Nicole still had a good number of peeps at around 830, maybe 2000 or so. I didn't get a good gauge of how many people were at DD during peak.
And yeah, Paskal deserves the accolades, thank you for passing it on.... I think he even played an extra 30 min or so before Fanciulli came on, outstanding job. |

Agreed with SPin...Carl Cox absolutely destroyed the room. There was a rising tension each hour he played, the intensity level went on as his set progressed.
Nicole is one of my favourite DJs, but she was whack the first 45 minutes. She brought the vibe down but killed it after. I thought she should have played the other way around, kill it and then wind it down, but she did the opposite.
Holy girls, I love the costumes. Montreal has some hotties! |

yeah, bringing the vibe down to create her own mood is all fine but it's a fine line when you have multi stages and esp in a festival format with that kind of crowd, compared to, say, a Stereo crowd that is there for that one or two specific dj(s).
I thought Carl was slow and flowless and Nicole quite dynamic when they did Stereo together and now this Beb it was the opposite.
Best single-day party in North America, from the vibe to the theme, the music, etc, imo. They've really turned the party around since the garbage editions from a few years back. |

Spin you said it well. I really wanted to see Nic as I was riding on the festival big room style he played at DD a couple years back. Meh... Bored. Did my touring around and seeing what was all at this party during most of his set and socializing. Back ground music.
Now for Carl - oh yes... he saved the night and brought it to a million different levels. Very good way to describe it Big Boss, a growing intensity. So many head explosions - fist pumps and yells from the crowd. I just got chills now thinking about it again. What a monster of a four hour set.
I did not see any of Nicole as I wanted to see DD from beginning to end as this is what I had been waiting for. I did step in when she was playing to go to the washroom, and I did not like what she was doing at all from what I heard. Now for Deep Dish - they developed their set very well. I was not expecting the old deep dish feelings and vibes, and for the most part, did not get them. They created their own new vibe together - a lot of kicking tech beats. The last hour was beautiful. They dropped a great remix of Flashdance... the room was going mental. They kind of went a bit whack for 15-20 minutes with weird loops and crap, but turned it around again and played some old tunes out again.
This was my first Bal and I would do it again. The vibe and the magic of the night - you just get lost in the party. I never thought I could pull it off until the lights came up, but time just disappeared and next thing you know it was 10am! The three rooms were awesome just to wander into different arenas and sounds. The organization from the pick up of my want ticket, to the 15 minutes it took me to get in at 1130pm, to quick, professional security, the decor, lighting and staging, top notch - this night was perfect (minus the Fanciulli set...lol)
I hope they announce some early DJs again next year as that is what got me to buy my ticket and give Bal a chance.
