What makes trance different from techno and other electronic genres?

What is the difference between trance and other genres of techno and electronica? I started listening to Armin van Buuren and I was told that he has a trance style. I never knew. Who are some of the original trance artist I can listen to?

Listen to some of Tiesto from early 2000's - dance valley set.

Here is what I explain in another post. To me trance means tunes that are airy, full of energy, uplifting and make you smile with your hands up, with melody, rhythm, bass lines, buildups, many track layers, incredible drops and lift offs, and that you can actually dance and groove to (not just mosh jumping up and down).
Solarstone is putting out current "pure trance" albums, and though I haven't heard them yet, I am sure they are good. Solarstone's re-release of the classic "Seven Cities" is all you need to hear to peg it: Seven Cities (pure mix) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB9SaTnh41M Put in on, crank it up and listen to all of the incredible beautiful layers weaving in and out... To me, this is tune is a perfect depiction of trance.

Nah usually a 2 bar loop for techno.
Trance=focus on melody, quite often some harmony, energetic bassline, minimal focus on sound design, melodies to create atmosphere or emotion, rythmn of the melody is less relevent than other two styles, focus on highs/upper bass.
House=Sometimes focus on melody, more of a focus on groove than on complex gradually building rythmns (like techno), generally more chill/funky atmosphere, melodies for the sake of it rather than for emotion, focus on lower highs and more evenly distributed.
Techno=focus on rythmn, a focus on shorter sections as the above guy said, heavy focus on the aesthetic of the individual sounds (like all the percussion might be quite sharp and the synth will go with that), occasional basic melodies to create extra atmosphere, melodies usually fit into the rest of the rythmn, focus on highs/bass.
That's some basics of what I can think of at the moment. Some of it might be a bit off though. I'm also assuming by trance he means euro trance not psy trance obviously. |
