I'm really confused about this, don't know how to go.
How many HD's are necessary for correct tasks distribution?
So, one main hd for the daw (and only the daw?), one dedicated to audio samples and various patches, one dedicated to vst's/plugins, one for vst/plugins content, one for general purpose and one for pron?
Is that ok? How many hd's do I need and what task each one should fulfil. |

Your DAW/host, plugins, and their presets can/should all reside on your main system drive. Keep your samples and sample libraries (e.g., for Kontakt, romplers) on a separate drive, though. Also, it's a good idea to keep your project files (i.e., your DAW's files and any audio folders associated with your projects) on a dedicated drive. And, make sure you have a dedicated backup drive for your most important files (use an off-site backup [e.g., cloud storage] as well).
Most pros keep their p0rn stashed on a separate computer altogether and, if you're really serious about it, you'll probably want at least two 2TB drives, plus another two for backup. |

i only have one harddrive, and from time to time i upload a zip file of my projects to the cloud for backup. this way i know that my legacy will live on forever (in the archives of NSA). if i die, all my work is still alive - you just have to dig deep for it. |

haha, that last line was cracking
Btw cryo, I was wondering, do you think it would be better if I was to buy an external hd and install there my daw/plugins rather than moving everything else on to that ext drive? Cause right now I got everything packed on my main drive. |

No, real pros keep their p0rn on multiple SSD arrays in Raid0. You'll want to ask that Fawn4Sean guy; he has like 18 SSD's all dedicated to his 4k HD P0rn collection. He regards himself more as unsecured offsite storage for the adult industry.
Be careful though, he has this really illegal stuff involving thai funboys that he made while drug trafficking in the region. |

No, keep your DAW/plugins on your main system drive. I personally wouldn't use an external drive for anything other than backing up files.
If you have a desktop/tower computer, how many hard drive slots does it have, and how many internal (e.g., SATA) hard drives can you mother board support? Or, are you using a laptop? |

It has at least 4 more slots. I am with asus motherboard.
So? |

Dude, I know it's states Newbie in your name, but I don't think Dave could really do anything more for you unless he came over to your house, and installed the drives for you. Read his two previous posts, it's all there. 4 slots mean you have space for 4 drives. 1 system, and three extra. |

Ok, I got it.
Sorry, I didn't even know you could add more drives "internally". :(
Case solved. |

So, with four more internal HD slots, I'd suggest the following, at a minimum:
C: (your existing system drive): OS, DAWs, plugins, and all other software
Drive 2: Music Projects - in your DAW's preferences, set this drive as your default for all projects, associated audio files, etc.
Drive 3: Samples - put all of your sample libraries here, including one shots, libraries for your instrument plugins (most of them will ask you where to put them. I organize my Samples into separate folders for each developer (e.g., Native Instruments, Spectrasonics) and subfolders for each instrument (e.g., Kontakt, Maschine, Omnisphere, Trilian).
Drive 4: Backup/Archive
You might want to consider using the fourth drive as a RAID array, but I haven't personally done that, so maybe RANN, L4C, or someone else more computer savvy can advise you there. |

Wow, an entire dedicated drive only for that?
Well, ok! |

an entire drive isnt much bro. its like a night on the city, if that.
i would:
first drive: OS and all software
second drive: all projects, samples, renders etc etc
then have another computer/laptop for porn, music, image-libraries, your personal documents etc.
then have both computers backed up to an external drive which you leave in a firesafe. also burn out everything important on dvd and put at your parents house from time to time. except the porn. |
