| I'm not a dj, but it seems like there isn't as much creative options involved with trance mixing as there might be with house and techno, where the percussion from different songs really has the opportunity to mix with each other over longer periods of time. Also it seems that live remixing would suit house and techno much better. Correct me if I'm wrong, again, I'm not a dj. |

Trance is generally extremely boring to mix, mainly because every track has exactly the same structure. Some of the older tracks did have unusual structures that invited interesting transitions, but that's pretty much it. House is almost as boring though. There are a few DJs who do really interesting things, but the majority of house DJs, even the most well respected, are doing nothing interesting whatsoever on the technical front. Progressive is generally designed for long transitions, but a lot of producers seem to think that means making their tracks utterly predictable.
Techno is still the most mixable genre. Generally speaking, it's the genre that really needs to be mixed creatively to make full sense. The majority of techno records in isolation are ing boring, and they're intended to be abused by qualified decknicians. Drum 'n bass is probably a close second - d&b DJs tend to be more musical than their techno equivalents. |

I heard Hip-Hop is the most difficult and meticulous form of music to DJ.
I also heard from someone that EDM is the easiest to mix. To an extent I can agree with that but I think if we take EDM mixing on the level of Northern Exposure's technical level, then no. The mixing in that mix is amazing. |

boring how? OP is lacking.
i can understand todays trance or trouse being boring to mix, because the records themselves are boring - worse still, the tracks all sound the same no matter the artist. it's like there is one single guy mastering and compressing all these tracks.
the old stuff can be great fun to mix. depends what style and technique. plus the older tracks had individual personality unlike today.
it helps if you keep the mixing short and sweet; high energy. none of this pretentious long-winded, drawn out transitions - you're mixing trance FFS, hate dj's that hold onto a track for longer than is necessary... total buzz kill, especially when you're past a definitive mix point and you can still hear it droning on in the background
clubby tracks are great fun to play with. stuff like hands burn - good shot and ferry corsten's remix of in the beginning. dropping a bassline as it comes in full blast is great.
i like the style ferry corsten employs in trance nation 1. there is no messing about there, and the mix never slows down. sometimes he ruthlessly chops stuff off at the knees :stongue:
point is, if you like the music itself, then mixing it should be fun also. if you want to get technical, then it's obviously not where you need to be... although it is a great starting point - and there is a lot to be learned from it. are you here to boast of your mixing prowess? :happy2:
although, i personally find it easier sometimes to do a longer drawn out mix, than to do a very quick transition. i mean, all you need to do is keep the records matched, and blending isn't exactly rocket science. you either have a feel for it, or you don't. |

Northern Exposure was mixed in ProTools.
Hip-hop mixing can be extremely skillful if you're going down the old skool turntablism route, but the majority of hip-hop DJs playing in meat markets every weekend aren't doing any of that. |
