Actually, quite the opposite, if again, you know the anthropology;

Around the time, Joel (to his mates ;) ) was looking for a name, the trend in media among the "yoof" was substituting numbers for letters in text message abbreviations, known as leetspeak or l33t etc.

The story goes, right at this time, he was working on a track when his computer died and found the culprit to be a mouse that had climbed in to his PSU and fried itself.

Thus Deadmau5 was born. Now whether or not it's true, it had all the right things going for it - a funny/interesting backstory, it was on trend with his demographic and it also stood out as something different. He was also able to tie it in with other branding like the mask etc.

There's also something to be said for a name that aren't instantly pronounceable but not difficult to get your head around. The moment someone goes how do you pronounce that or what does that sound like, someone is thinking about it. Too difficult and they don't bother, too easy and there's no mistique.

(remember all the jokes about people mispronouncing it Dead-Mow-Five? Just added more hype.

My point was that the name is .

Because I'm a wit on here.
It is brand nagative.

Every decision I make goes thru a basic cost benefit algorithm and to name the things I'm working on would only serve my ego. Trust me, I have been close while inebriated and it serves , well it doesn't serve me. And some are a few months away. But no, I use a non plume, and I use my moms last name because it sounds cooler, it will prevent people from dogging onto my past ie I've had a few roes with the law

Just basic marketing. If something doesn't make you look better, it is making you look worse. If it is not making you money, it is losing money.

And I would say I'm still in that space were I really don't know what I want to do. I tried a few things, the classical chops are just a small part of what I can.

His name is more clever than people. Think

The whole play on Bauhaus. It coincided with the huge cat craze, it is gender neutral. It doesn't take it self seriously which at the time, I mean people with names you would think must do adult contemporary, it is early on the alphabet.

There is a checklist for names.when you hire a marketing consultant, they have all pretty much layed the theoretical ground work. Th only thing they can't really know in the equation are trends.

Deadmau5 mocks EDM in many ways which is inline with his personality. And with internet ,the leet speak is fine . You could not do that 20 years ago because spelling mattered

Exactly. I don't however think that he intentionally thought, "there's big craze with cats, I'll pick a name related" etc - it was more that he was on trend with his demographic and I think it;s an excellent point to make that he's mocking EDM, as that is part of his personality.

It's really quite smart when you think about it. , I was watching Runner Runner (bad thriller film) on the plane and he's in it as the DJ at the party. Genius marketing. Which other DJ has anything close to instant brand recognition?

You;re right about the marketing consultant.

Most people don't realize that Nike don't actually make anything. Not a sausage themselves. They are a marketing, sponsship and licencing company, that's it.

At one point a few years ago, they were trademarking 10,000 names a year to use for their products. Every greek/roman god or deity. Every sporting word. Every term related to speed and velocity in every language that has ever existed. They have a backstory and lineage ready to go for each one.

To be fair, it's the ethnicity that makes using Roman Paniagua as your name good. Check out guys like Mario Piu, Mauro Picotto, etc your name works. Romani Panea is a variation if you want to add a "high class fashion designer" touch. ;)

Could you elude copyright problems by replacing letter/s with a number?

To be blunt: Yes. Though it is considered a bit corny to do that... :D

Well, for sure I won't be going that far to call myself "Tiest0" or similar.

But another thing I was wondering is if a company completely unrelated to music production could object some copyrights?

Looney, where are you...

If you're considering using "cryo4nik" as your new artist name, forget it. I've already copyrighted it. :)
