On Friday, May 2nd, we head back to Slake, with someone who has not been seen in NYC in a while...
From the prolific electronic dance breeding ground that is The Netherlands, he landed in 2008. In that year alone he was tipped by Tiësto as “the hottest producer around”, by DJ Magazine as “the next big thing to hit trance” and took home Trackitdown.net’s Trance Award for the scene’s ‘Best New Face’. Since then he has been a mainstay in the trance scene, his dark sounds tearing up dance floors around the world.
He is the Riel Deal: Sied van Riel!

I got to see him twice in Miami and I have to say, he earned a new big fan with me. NOt only were his sets really good, but hes SO NICE. He made a point to appreciate and dance to other artists sets....something none of the artists thought was necessary. Very cool. Much respect :)
Im really excited to see a feature length set now, if he impressed me with 70 minutes, then i am confident a 2+ hour set will be really good! |

1 of the worst parties I have ever been to...
Barely anyone there, and the ones who were there probably were comp'd by esscala to go... My friend and I were online, and practically everyone there was on some guestlist or another... (except us...) sheesh... We felt like suckers paying $30 at the door
Music was boring...
Lasers were cool.. Drinks are cheap...
Overall, I will be careful with the esscala events I go to going forward. |

that sucks.
it's bad enough when you're at a place and the first hour or two are lame, but the whole night?
Cielo is like that on Thursdays before mid, even with the free entry before 11 and open bar... |

really? You sure it wasnt will call?
tickets were from ticketmaster, and we all had no choice but to do will call....so it may have looked like a list, but it wasnt
But i have no idea, thats just me...but it was fast adn I can see how people might have thought there were lists...maybe there were.
boring? really? seriously?
The techno in the beginning...yeah i almost died....but once that was over i was in heaven! I almost like the techno start because i feel like i appreciate the trance that much more when it gets on HAHAHAHA
And hello drinks...the drink and shot special always kicks ass
I dont know what kind of liquor that is but im always much more toasted off of three shots at slake than i am at any other bar HAHAHAH |

I got there pretty early, for me....around 11....
It was pretty empty but people were filing in slowly....At first we were told the show was upstairs, which i had never even seen before. I was sad at first.
then we got downstairs and found that the show was truly there, where it belonged. Not that i hated upstairs, ive just never been there and it was such a confusing set up and really small.
The night started with techno, so thats when i did the majority of my drinking and mingling. I love the laid back atmosphere there!
By 1am i feel like the music was great and so was the crowd. It wasnt huge, but ive yet to be to slake and find a huge crowd. Trance was playing so the crowd was not really what i was paying attention to. I know when i wanted to get to the front it wasnt hard, but it certainly was not empty.
Nic Chagall was like 10 deep by 230am...just saying.
I know that kind of sucks for the artists, but for the fans its fun. So ill leave it at that. I dont think it was a failure tho. Just my personal opinion. everyone likes to have a good laid back night every once in a while.
Dan ended his set really well, the minute i heard it turn to trance i was like a little girl again, all excited and smiles! He really has yet to let me down.
SvR played an awesome set, as expected. The man is so great and humble i cant even begin, or this will be much too long of a post. The music was exactly what I wanted and what i expected.
When zack came on the crowd did thin out, but i feel like it was still awesome because everyone was SO HAPPY and screaming and dancing and happy to see zack!
id rather 30 amazing fans that are there FOR ZACK than 300 people high and there bc its NYC and they know they can get away with and just be zombies.
Zack was AMAZING!! I cant believe its been so long since i have seen him, and it never ceases to amaze me how friggin awesome his trance sets are!
I do feel bad because i was so excited and (cough cough- those shots tho!) so i was on cloud nine taking so many pics and videos...no one else was and I felt like it was blasphemy that people might miss these classics that he was throwing down! HAHHA Hopefully i wasnt too annoying hehehe
For me, this was an awesome night. My fav nights are like this. Low key, great music. Time to chat, dance, and be silly....
I really love slake. Everyone is so nice there. |

compare all the names mentioned above with the flyer at top.
Whats up with that?
This annoys me two ways:
if I had wanted to see Zach or Nic how would I know they're even on the bill?
if I went expecting just Sid with a warm up, meaning a nice LOOONG set for once, I 'd be annoyed at another multiple dj, short-set night.
Is it too much to ask for the actual line-up?
we're not talking set times here.
also, Dan who?
Also, based upon hommey's comment, and others' , and personal observation, I think it's a fair statement that NYC (area) trance crowd sucks.
This OBVIOUSLY doesn't include the posters here, but seriously, the room isn't filled to whatever max. number is attending until 12;30+, and already thinning out 2-2:30 hours later?
its ridiculous.
These events should go on three hours earlier, I could go, and still do Output, Verboten, etc from peak til close... |
