Licensing is where it's at. Produce music for media, TV, commercials, internet, movies. I'm switching my focus to that. Easily done now, just create little ditties of all genres and upload to music catalog sites. No creative limits at all, only limit is your imagination. I'm just getting started, but from posts I've read at KVR audio, people are making decent money.
It's so hard to gain any traction as an artist. I think I'm done with it. Even if you do get somewhere, probably won't see much money. It's all going to streaming now, which pays next to nothing (half a cent per play). So you'd have to DJ to make any money.
Ghost producing and selling raw materials to other artists, hhhmm OK. You have to be a student of current trends and styles, production techniques. I don't think I'd be very good at it, you have to be a details person. The kind of person that can listen to a track and tell you exactly what genre it is and why. But if I wanted to ghost produce, where do I apply? |

Agree with Clooney, you don't need a studio, just just need to produce, look at Garrix not even an adult and moves 25.000 people at tomorrowland while his parents wait in the DJ booth.
but then again, pareto out what the chances are of getting there, it obviously takes an on par track, but also excellent social networking skills, an influencial manager, who can be a hero and make some money by marketing you.
odds are that 99.99% of us, NEVER get there. we drag our own CDJ's and PA around for beer money and call it a gig :D
I have a decent workload every week, but still haven't given up on my daytime job. Because i just LOVE money and gear too much to start living like a musician.
look at this forum, other than Joel, who actually really made it?
It's a dream we all have and i just can't seem to get my head around it, what really happens from 17 year old kid to EDM stardom, there seems to be some kind of magic wand, order of freemasons of EDM these kids get touched by and then it happens...... not sure if it's luck. but it's something all the rest of us here lack.... |

| I think Joel and making it are kinda 2 different things. I've been living well from music for about 4 years. I can't complain. |

Probably true, no clue what he earns.
I would only switch if i could generate more than 150k$ a year, which is not happening.... |

| I agree. I'd say making it is the point where someone earns himself enough money to live comfortably. 'Comfortably' is quite relative though. |

Most people in music start making a decent living by mid 30s and generally reach the higher bracket by 50. The job of rockstsr accounts for 0% of people making a living doing music. It takes longer, more work and more risk than more traditional jobs but you are doing what you love and as you get older, the work is easier as you get to work on what you want so retiring is not really a question because it isn't really a job anymore.
Everyone I know thst makes a good living in music that is sustainable thru changes and isn't relying on a resource that can be made oboslete in 1 year is poor till their 30s. Most have money for a mortgage by 40. And family, you aren't going to have that till 40. You won't have time until your 50. But the next 50 years, your income grows, you are getting payed to play , your are surrounded by interesting people, you have the satisfaction of having invested your time in yourself. It is a long game scenario I suppose.
Music is not a sane choice if money is your motivation. |

Diversification is the future.
Be the brand. |
Also, be young and attractive. And not shy of being ready to "sell out". Arguably, ALEX MORPH, SOLARSTONE, MIKE or J00F may be top notch producers, they hardly sell out arenas and festivals.
Meanwhile Martin "bang me on keyboard" Garrix's "animals" gets Tiësto's vagina all wet (#Talent, #GettinPaid) age even gets trolled by Deadmau5...
The lower is your common denominator, the greater are your chances for success. If you can get that down syndrome kid to hum your primitive melody - you sir have a potential hit on your hands..(#Profit) |

Make music or sell out trying I guess...
Would be nice to live the dream and all that...but making music as a love/hobby where one can focus on making what they love and saying off to being forced into a mainstream mold seems more rewarding to me. Though I guess the lack of exposure is a downside... Nobody breathing down your neck to produce a certain way though, and timetables aren't an issue.
Seems like focusing on a good stable career first and honing musical talent on the side is the safer bet unless you are some music savant with the right connections and some loving parents early on in life. Ended up doing the stable career thing myself as a Mechanical Engineer / NDT Technician. Being able to actually buy all the fun toys that people drool over and not starve at the same time is nice.
Sad seeing this topic as I feel like I probably passed up a potential opportunity for a step towards the dream. Recently a local music agent "just so happened" to browse through my soundcloud (which is strange because I don't advertise myself at all) and asked if I would open for Basshunter at a reasonably sized venue...though I lack any know-how in live performance or dj'ing... Maybe I was just being trolled but the thought was nice, *shrug*. |

Oddly enough, my latest release charted on Junodownload's trance charts this week. It's at #304 now.
Unfortunately, I won't see the sales figures for another 6 months... |

It's considered to be the less mainstream version of Beatport I believe. Certainly nowhere as popular but I believe it's the second most used site for buying electronic music.
Off topic but your "Great Migrations" ep is really pleasant. |
