| I'm looking for some really beautiful bangin polyphonic trance tracks. I want stuff that is like really intense and complex, and has lots of synths going through different melodic lines. Some examples of this style of trance include Mekka - Diamondblack, Technique - Sun Is Shining (Mash Up Matt Mix), M.I.K.E. - Sunrise at Palamos, PPK - Ressurection, Bunker - Descent, Taste Experience - Highlander, etc. To me, this stuff is some of the most beautiful and euphoric trance out there. The key is thick polyphony (many melodies at once with many layers of underlying sub-melody, harmony, and bass). This stuff is awesome :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: so if anybody could recommend any tracks of this nature it would be greatly appreciated. |

And I have a few recommendations...let me know what you think.
Sapphirecut - Free Your Mind
Persistent bassline, dreamy vocal phrase, and some subtle wailing, all intermingled with a couple of synth lines... fantastic.
TasteXperience - Tantrix
Good bassline on this one too, with a couple of good melodies going on at the same time.
Mixolydian - Abduction
Immerse yourself in this one...
God Within - Raincry (Submerged mix!!!)
Where to begin with this one....just one of my all-time favorites.
Moonman - Galaxia (Robert Miles)
A beautiful, light, feel-good track. This is one of those rare tracks you can recognize after the first note even if you haven't heard it in years....
Jorio Presents Cyberdiva - Remember Me (Spacebrothers mix)
Nice bassline on this track too....operatic vocals, sweeping orchestral synths....beautiful.
Natious - Amber
I prefer the original mix over all others.... I like to cut the bass on this one & layer the synths over other tracks.
That's it for now....hope you enjoy my suggestions, and let me (us) know what you think. This is already a great thread.

I wasn't naming a genre... I was just trying to describe the style of the music... the stuff I'm talking about is rich in thick textured polyphony with many melodies playing at once - ie it is polyphonic. I guess this is how people come up with new genre names... uplifting trance is uplifting, and hard trance is hard... polyphonic trance is polyphonic?! Dear God, what have I started? :nervous: |

Yeah, thats true, but I'm looking for the REALLY thick stuff. If you listen to PPK - Resurrection or Taste Experience - Highlander (Original Mix) then you can hear in certain points in the song where there are like about 10 different synth lines, each playing a different melody at the same time. I'm not looking for stuff that is just one main part with say a harmonic backup, I'm looking for the kinda stuff for which it is impossible to hum the tune to because there are about 5 different tunes at once. Take, for example, PPK - Resurrection. Skip to about 5:30 into the tune... theres no way you can hum the tune because it is so busy and there is so much going on at once. To me, it takes a tremendous amount of skill to incorporate such a high number of different melodic lines together at once... Bach was extremely good at doing this. When this is done well, it creates an awesome piece of music with a rich texture. To me, this is what songs like Solarcoaster and Ligaya are missing... sure they're beautiful sounding chillout tracks, but they lack the complexity that can be found in some other songs. Highlander and Resurrection are two of the best examples I can think of... another good one would be Goldenscan - Sunrise (Tiesto Mix). Just wild stuff. :eyes: :eyes: |

I noticed that alot of faster paced progressive(???) trance tracks tend to be alot more polyphonic than some of the bigger anthemic trance tracks. Sure, tracks like System F - Solstice and Ligaya tend to be really heavy and massive sounding, yet because their synths are so in your face and large, one rarely gets to hear what's going on in the back.
Shmuel Flash - Chilling Moments is a great example. Listen to the Bedrock vocal mix and lose yourself in the structure.
Gouryella - Gouryella is a prime example of anthemic trance at it's finest BECAUSE of what you are talking about...very diverse in composition and drive
It's not how many synths/bass lines/ etc are used, but HOW they are used. Even distribution of sound can have a great effect on how the track is presented. How bout Safri Duo's Played Alive? It uses a bongo lead with a banging bass beat...that's it, yet it still KILLS dancefloors with it's breakdown(PvD E-mix @ Casino, Berlin Dec. 17 2000) |

Yeah, I agree with you there, a lot of the intense polyphonic stuff tends to be a bit more prog. Tracks like Sasha - Xpander ring a bell here. The reason why tracks like Gouryella - Gouryella are so great is because the synths and basses work so well together and sound good. The main climax of Ligaya, to me, is just a mish-mash of notes and chords together that follow a well-worked 96 beat chord sequence with a lot of good sounding underlying synths... it sounds good, but just doesn't blow me away like some of the other tracks I have mentioned. To me, the best part of ligaya is the gradual build-up during the first three minutes. Every 64 beats or so, another layer of synth or bass is added. The first minute and a half or so is like a buildup of the bass synths, then at around 1:24 that high-pitched ostinato thing pops in, then 64 beats later those nice underlying broken chords, and 64 beats after that a nice lead. To me, the part between about 2:20 and 2:50 is really awesome with some great polyphony... when I first heard ligaya I thought it was going to be a fabulous track, but I was disappointed by the final climax - to me it just doesn't live up to the first three minutes. There's something missing there IMO, I mean sure they're pretty chords and a nice thick bassline but it needs a lead or maybe some vocals... at least solarcoaster has a nice lead.
Now take a look at PPK - Resurrection, which IMO is one of the greatest trance songs of all time. It has one of those most thickly-layered melodic progressions I have ever heard. Start out at around 1:40 or so, where all you have is the underlying sine tone. Then the main melody (another sine tone) is added around 1:50. At around 2:15 you can start to hear some strings coming in. At 2:30, a bass, a phaser, and a beepy ostinato are brought in. At 3:10, the drums and another layer of bass are added. At 3:55, some more chords, a filtered synth (sounds almost like a 303), and a strange whistley synth (kinda reminds me of the X-Files theme) are brought in. At 4:35, another synth stab is added. At 5:15, another filtered synth is brought in, completing the build-up. THAT IS A LOT OF SYNTHS BUT HOLY $HIT DOES IT SOUND GREAT!!! :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: No two synths are playing the same notes or rhythm, so you would probably expect it just to sound like a chaotic mish-mash of notes, but all of the synths just work so well together... whoever composed this is a genius. This is the kinda stuff I'm talkin about when I refer to bangin' polyphonic trance. The only tracks I know of that even compare to Resurrection's complexity are Taste Experience - Highlander (Original Mix) and maybe M.I.K.E. - Sunrise at Palamos.
Anyways... I'm gonna go and download the rest of all this stuff you guys are suggesting to me. So far its good stuff, but like most good trance, its hard to find. Thanks for all your suggestions and keep 'em coming. :) |

Try M.I.K.E. - Elements of life. Not that many synths but atleast two that's playing different melodies and the bassline also plays it's own melody. Oh, and Ayu - Boys & girls (Push instrumental dub) is a prime example of this polyphonic trance. Actually most of M.I.K.E.'s trance tunes are very polyphonic as you say. More examples: Intimo - Retention and Matanka - Lost in a dream (Push transcendental remix).
Lots of Airwave tunes are like this too, like my favourites: Lightspeed, Innerspace and Mysteries of life.
Yeah, polyphonic trance is the best :) |

Excellent explanation in Ligaya. It's a gradual buildup, then breaksdown with something missing.
Another good example is Second Sun's Empire. Just like Ligaya, the first 5 minutes is a gradual layering of more synths, basslines and whatnot. After the mini break, there's a really crisp lead that comes in, then the break.
I noticed during the breakdown and main melody(when I was high...hehhee) that about 4 different synths are playing at the same time...after 32 counts, 1 of the 4 change melody, yet the other 3 remain the same. 32 counts it does that again. WOnderful breakdown and lead. |
