Monday nights are Game of Thrones night at my place. I have a couple of friends over and enjoy this gem of show together. We also play the board game on occasion. And later this year, in August, I'm going on vacation in Dubrovnik, Croatia. That's where the Kings Landing scenes are shot. We're going on a special GoT tour there.
Yes, I'm a fan. But no, we're not going on vacation there because of this fact. It's just a nice addition :) |

The TV show is actually better than the books. Martin has some good ideas, but he's written himself into a lot of holes. We'll see if he gets out in the long run, but, overall, the show is able to smooth over a lot of his mistakes.
It's rather cool that a show based on a fantasy series has gotten this popular, though. When it was announced, I was worried we might get half a season and then it would get cancelled. |
I'm about halfway through book 1 so far, and I've been enjoying it. I can see why they decided to make a show out of it, the way it's structured feels really suited to that. I heard books 2 and 3 are where the show really starts to veer away from the books, is that when the holes you're talking about start becoming apparent? |

It doesn't so much veer away from the books as smooth over them. It maintains the same beginning and ending of the important plot points, but works the nitty gritty details out a bit differently.
Book 3 is definitely the highlight of the series and is why seasons 3 and 4 have been so enjoyable, but we'll really see what happens next season.
Books 4 and 5 are decent, but they're weighed down by the fact that he's added so many new characters and stalled so long with the ones people care about. In book 5 he is still introducing people who are then going to become main players, while killing people from book 1 to keep things interesting.
He really made a mistake when writing the children as so young in the books, which he realized around book 2. Somehow he thought that each book could take a few years, when that is just not how this type of fiction works. |

Show is good. Books are great.
You should be watching or reading if you haven't been. |

| I specifically didn't want to watch too far into the series without reading the books first. Started watching season 2 before I got through book 2, am now catching up on season 3, and because I still hadn't made a good dent in book 2 have lost interest in both the books AND the show. Lol. |

Considering where you live I'm surprised you need a tv show to see more inbred shenanigans on a daily basis. |
