I think the perception in other scenes was probably that the two were different sides of the same coin, but there was definitely a lot of mutual antipathy between trance and progressive in that era. Not just the fans but the DJs and even the inlays of mix compilations. |

There were so many arguments on TA about which was better. I'd like to find some threads just to see who people described one being better than the other. The discussions would get pretty cutthroat.
Also good point about Trance DJs spinning Prog, it was pretty much the foundation of their sets. |

| this whole prog vs trance war started around 2002 on TA and it was still ongoing right when I was a noob on this site. Cobalt spearheaded the prog trance alliance. people claimed that progressive trance was a made-up tag that didn't exist and that all those tracks were progressive house. I applaud their zealotry. |

Can't possibly see how....
The 'Superclubs' during the period I mentioned were rammed every week / month.
DJs would spend £100 a week on vinyl easily.
Consider the numbers of albums that Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Euphoria, GU, MOS sold.
Cd single sales were through the roof in HMV / Tower Records / Virgin.....
How much do you think a 'EDM' punter would spend a week on music? I bet it's not even an average of £20 a week.
The only factors where your argument would have any shred of substantiation is in regards to inflation. That or the fact that the distribution costs for music have plummeted due to the digital medium.
We could go one step further and argue that trance music is still making a reasonable cashflow from sales to this day. |

As I've already said....... Inflation.
Of course the DJs pay is going to be higher today than the era I referred to

That aside, you have just established your own statement that 'trance was never as big as.....' to be completely without substance.
It was big.....ing huge and like it or not, still has it's place. |

That list is quite telling.....
Now when you add all the revenue that record labels made from releases amongst the other factors, I think you will find that several DJs in that list could easily be accountable for 'trance' to have generated as much revenue as it did which to counter your objective defines 'Big' |
