Yes, I'm exceedingly riled up, especially after I said I'm quite convinced there won't be an outbreak. I'm not in the least bit worried about what's going on, rest assured.

However. You obviously don't know the American people, as this will indeed cause a panic, and in fact already has, apparently:

Dinner for one.

The comment of a person who has a wife and a newborn baby, yet continues to troll TA unabashedly.

Do you troll TA while holding him in your lap, as well? I'm sure you do it after sex, at least, no?

"Riled up" doesn't mean "worried" and I didn't mention anything about the American public being either panicked or panic-free, but by all means continue to respond to my mockery of you with semantic quibbling.
AlphaStarred
Riled up means angry/irriated, I know. Thanks for the useless clarification.

What exactly are you mocking? I just showed you that not all of America consists of an "informed populace," hence the panic. Hence, "you obviously don't know the American people." But by all means continue talking about the incubated semen, it's an interesting subject.

I bet it was Ramen tonight.
SYSTEM-J
An irrelevant demonstration, given I'd already clarified what I meant by "informed" before you replied:

quote:
I mean a populace that has been given accurate information about preventative measures, which a country like the US can disseminate quickly and efficiently.

You just type any old you can think of in retaliation and then post-rationalise it later.
AlphaStarred
I don't need to retaliate or post-rationalize, as I've already ing mentinoned that there is, and will be, a bunch of panic-stricken Americans, despite your "accurate information about preventative measures." This will be quite evident in the upcoming weeks, I'm sure, but I'm sure by then you've already prepared a premeditated reply, to try and justify your previous posts.
OrangestO
As much as CNN would love it, no one is ing panicking.

It's water cooler talk at this point.

I never mentioned anything about panic or the prevention of panic. The comment about informing the public was related to preventing the spread of infection. Maybe you should read back through the thread and remind yourself of what you're arguing about.

Lots of Florida kids around here have probably been through at least one major hurricane. I was in Naples when Wilma made Landfall as a 5. The stores were pretty gutted, people were gouging fresh water in the streets and we lost power for a month; but it just wasn't that bad. Obviously an actual pandemic would be a different scenario, especially one with such a protracted incubation, like Ebola- but the relative panic would be well-rooted in isolation from one another, which Americans in particular are actually rather apt at, if you ask me.

When we speak of panic and a misinformed population in North America, though, it just doesn't quite compare to these West African nations. In Guinea last month, for example:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014...N0HD2JE20140918

There's a gaping cultural disconnect when it comes to herd welfare in these countries. Compounded I suppose by the fact that Guinea happens to be 80%+ Muslim, and the West has a problematic track record with healthcare and Muslim communities, the seeds of distrust have probably inflated the spread and the death rate far beyond what any western nation would experience.

I can't wait to catch ebola.

Ebola isn't as easy to contract as one might think. Here's an interview worth reading with one of the scientists that first came into contact with it:

SYSTEM-J
That's quite a chilling interview in its implications for the less developed parts of the world. It's been my hypothesis for a while (I've probably repeated it on TA) that the human population explosion will be forcefully halted in the next century by some epidemic or plague that wipes out large parts of the third world. In any natural ecosystem, when the population of one species grows unsustainably it is always culled by natural forces, restoring equilibrium. We often assume we're above nature but I still think the same process will happen on a global scale to the human population. I was even mulling over a sci-fi premise of how human society might develop in the aftermath of such an event.
